Hotel New York in Rotterdam

We are enjoying a beautiful spring over here. So last Friday my friend Z. and I took our bikes to the ferry and went to Rotterdam.
Rotterdam, I told you before, was bombed in the 2nd World War, the center was bombed away, but to tell you the truth, I always have a feeling that the Dutch themselves demolished even more, for the sake of modern architecture. I think that they forgot to break down the Schieland house:

Schieland huis^.
I always love the details (and the colors!) of historic buildings.
Here a Fong Leng design.
We had a lovely lunch, did some serious shopping and then we took our bikes again and went to Hotel New York for tea. I want to show this hotel especially to my American readers. Lots of you might have seen Ellis Island in New York, to see where your ancestors hit American ground, but where did they come from, where did they leave European soil? If your ancestors are Polish, Russian, German or Dutch of course they might have taken the boat to the States here:
Now this building is known as Hotel New York but from the late 1800's until 1971 this was the headquarter of the Holland Amerika Lijn (=line).
From here thousands and thousands of people left for the New World.
Nowadays the art nouveau building is surrounded by very modern buildings.
Inside there is old next to new as well.
Binnen is er ook 'oud' naast nieuw:
From a distance these look like modern tiles, but if you look carefully you can see that these are photos, printed on laminate, very clever.
The art nouveau cast iron stairs and the 'metro' tiles.
Rose detail.
Detail van de trapleuning.
In the hall some original suitcases as decoration.
In de hal staan overal oude koffers ter decoratie.
 The hotel desk.
De hotelbalie.
Of course I didn't leave empty handed!

Geniet ervan!
Thanks for your visit, hope you are enjoying a wonderful spring too!
xoxo LiLi M.

What a fun trip and thank you for sharing HOTEL New York with us…
I wonder if my polish grandmother came by this way, she talked a lot about
growing up in Poland but didn’t like to talk about her voyage here at all.
She left all of her family behind, she was just 16, she came to be with a cousin that came
to the states a few years earlier.

Love that blue door...

I'm so excited to find out about Hotel New York! My grandma came to the U.S. from Russia and my grandpa came from Bohemia, or what is now known as the Czech Republic. We have started researching them, and so this is a great piece of information. I can't imagine what it was like to take a ship to America. I get seasick just thinking about it!
Happy Monday!

LILI!!! Oh my sweet friend, your presence at my birthday party made it sooo complete and wonderful. Thank you for your sweet well wishes! And this post of yours is marvelous. You know, I love to travel, no matter what mode and blog traveling is a cheap and easy way to do it! I love the notion of just getting on your bike, taking the ferry, and just peddling around town to do whatever you want. The history, the architecture and shopping in itself is such a delight. I so love hearing the history of New York-bound immigrants from the source....to think that so much that I am used to in this country originated with your folks. There is such a deep Dutch influence in New York and even here in Minnesota.

We too are having a magnificent spring, in fact, we are two weeks ahead of schedule! It is not usually until AFTER my birthday that things start blooming, but now, we are enjoying green grass, budding trees and bright pink azaleas.

I wish you a lovely week my dear friend,

Anita

Oh, more wonderful pictures of Rotterdam! It's funny to feel homesick about a place I only lived for a year, but I do. I remember Schieland huis well, but not so much the New York Hotel. Guess that I wasn't looking for America in the Netherlands.;)

Thank you so much for your sweet comments on my blog! It's funny that you mentioned that you don't like American recipes, because they call for strange ingredients, but that cake flour and baking powder is easy to get. When we were in Rotterdam, I had a terrible time finding "bakpoeder". Super de Boer and none of the other markets had it, but someone finally told us about the Drie Kleur Grutterij and we had to bicycle all the way to it, just to get baking powder.

I enjoyed the tour around Rotterdam, I have not been there before. That building looks really unusual especially between the modern ones.

Of course! Another pen to add to the collection. You have made me search for the pens of that type which I bought some years ago, I wonder what I have done with them...

Warm wishes

Hermine

LiLi, thank you for the tour around Rotterdam...i was always told growing up that i was "dutch~irish"...when i pressed my mother the last time she was here visiting, she was unable to say for sure who in the family was dutch...{the irish is from my dad}...my mother's family i guess never discussed their origins...kind of sad...but maybe someone in my ancestry wandered those same streets...your pictures are lovely!!!

I quite like the juxtaposition of the Art Nouveau buildings with the modern.. but give me 'old' any day over modern! I love the Art Nouveau period and have a fabulous Jugendstil book about the era.
Fabulous hotel.. might have to stay there one day!

Best regards from Britain.

Wonderful impressions and details, dear LiLi! I visited Rotterdam lots of years ago (it was some kind of working-holidays in the 1980ies, I visited inter alia a R.damer holiday place for children, I think the name was jeugdland), but I didn't see the lovely / interesting places you showed us.
Lots of hugs! Traude :o)

Gaat alles goed in Dort.
Lieve groetjes en dikke kus.
