To dye for!

Every once in a while my special friend Mrs. H. comes along and she always brings a lot of fun stuff, she has found at several flea markets, especially for me. It always feels like Christmas and my birthday are on the same day. Thank you ever so much Mrs. H! I think I could fill a lot of blogposts with her awesome gifts. And why not start that today? Look what was in her purse last time:

Zo nu en dan komt mijn vriendin Mrs. H. langs met een tas vol rommelmarkt vondsten, speciaal voor mij. Dat voelt altijd alsof Sinterklaas op mijn verjaardag ook nog eens op visite komt. Heerlijk, nogmaals bedankt voor al die leuke cadeautjes Mrs. H! Ik zou langzamerhand heel wat blogposten kunnen vullen met haar geschenken en waarom zou ik dat niet eens doen? Kijk maar eens wat ze de laatste keer bij zich had:

Een knopenkaart, prachtig die verweerde kleuren en een paar pakjes textielverf.

The dye is apricot, but you might have figured that out yourself.

Geweldig toch die opdruk? (klik op de foto voor een vergroting!).

De kleur is abrikoos, maar dat had je zelf wellicht al uitgevogeld.

This one is 'water green' ah can you imagine?

Dit is watergroen, dat lijkt me prachtig!

You could have guessed that this is red dye.

En dat dit rood is komt vast niet als een verrassing.

I already had these small dutch boxes of dye in my toy shops. I bought a lot of them when I was about 14. I bought them in a second hand shop back in about 1975 for a quarter a piece. You can see which color I never used, I loved to dye my clothes then, but my mom wasn't that excited that I used her washing machine!

Deze verfdoosjes van 't Lintje heb ik al sinds de jaren '70 . Ik kocht ze in een 2de hands zaakje in de Hobbemastraat in Den Haag voor een kwartje per stuk. Ik vond de doosjes (jaren 40-50?) toen al mooi, maar ik gebruikte de verf ook om mijn kleding op te pimpen. Deze kleuren gebruikte ik nooit en ze staan nu in één van mijn speelgoedwinkeltjes.

You might think that in this 21st century with numerous possibilities the fabric dye manufacturer would come up with something way better than THIS^, I took this photo in the drugstore. Mmm you just don't understand why packaging just have to be more and more ugly all the time.

Je zou verwachten dat tegenwoordig met al die mogelijkheden de stoffenverf fabrikant zijn/haar waren op crea wijze aan de man/vrouw zou willen brengen, maar niets is minder waar! Waarom kan er tegenwoordig nou zo weinig aantrekkelijk verpakt worden? De foto nam ik onder verbaasde blikken in 't Kruidvat.

Ok nowadays there is still much beauty to enjoy. Remember these^ cute actors? They are acting again in the newest Toy Story (3) movie. We saw it last week in imax and 3d and it was wonderful. I enjoyed each and every moment of it and even could use my hanky in the end. It is always a bit embarrassing when grown people start to cry over an animation motion picture, don't you think? But these funny guys did it again.

Toch zijn er wel degelijk dingen die steeds mooier en beter worden. Ik had het genoegen om afgelopen week naar de weergaloze acteerprestaties van bovenstaand koppel te kijken in de film Toy Story 3 in 3d en imax. GE-WEL-DIG van het begin tot het eind. Hoewel er niet veel echte 3d momenten waren, is de computer animatie weer zoveel beter geworden. Het verbaast me altijd dat zo'n film mij ook nog eens weet te ontroeren, maar ik had gelukkig die enorme 3d bril op!

Endless summer!

Thanks very much girls, also on behalf of our daughter Eva, for the many wishes we received on her graduation, we enjoyed them all! Now an endless summer is starting:

Bedankt voor de vele aardige wensen en felicitaties voor onze Eva omdat zij haar diploma behaalde. Nu gaat er een eindeloze zomer beginnen, als het aan onze hortensia 'Endless summer' ligt. Hij bloeit maar door, mmm wat een geluk dat je zomaar een endless summer kan kopen tegenwoordig!

Here is our hydrangea "Endless summer" that we bought last year. It will blossom all summer! Who would know that one can buy an endless summer nowadays? Just great!

Voor mij is het gewoon weer een groene dag: ik heb de oude speelgoedmand omgetoverd tot bagagefietsmand, zo daar kan lekker wat in, geen auto nodig in de drukke binnenstad. Heerlijk!

My basket is huge! I love it! Especially for my dutch readers: did you already pimp up your bike? There are so many fun ways to do that!

En hebben jullie je fiets al opgepimpt? Je hebt zulke leuke dingen ervoor tegenwoordig.

This guy, the delphinium, had it's first year here too, I love that he came back flowering, I love that color.

Ik was even bang dat zeker persoon deze ridderspoor en zijn broers weg geschoffeld had. Mmm die broers die wonen inmiddels ongetwijfeld in het groene paradijs, maar deze ridder bloeit!

Maybe you remember we had this water feature, but we bought another one this year:

Wij hadden natuurlijk al een vijver in de tuin, maar echt stromend water is toch nog handiger!

It is so much easier to water the plants from here!

The smell of the lonicera is divine, especially after sunset.

De kamperfoelie bloeit alsof hij per bloem betaald wordt, mmmm vooral 's avonds is er weinig dat tegen deze geur op kan.

En natuurlijk: geen tuin post in juni zonder rozen:

This pink one (sorry I am not good in remembering names!) smells just like a french parfumerie!

Deze roze roos ruikt zo ongelooflijk rozig, je krijgt direct zin om je eigen parfum samen te stellen. Mmm ik moet niet vergeten wat blaadjes te verzamelen voor in bad of voor in een sachet, maar dan heb ik wellicht een wat grotere struik nodig.

I have to remember to keep the petals to use in bath or in sachets.

Later this year there will be fruits to enjoy, like apples, plumes and these figs.

I enjoy this summer weather in our garden. I kinda collapsed after the huge graduation party, but now that I'm back on my feet I am not only going to wander through our garden but through blogland as well. Chat to you soon,

'Jumble'dam and sewing notions- Rommeldam en naaibenodigdheden

The jumble sale and flea market season is at its peak! Today was a beautiful day and I went to 'Rommeldam' which is a very large jumble sale, an annual event. I'm going to flea markets since I was born as my parents were avid collectors. Especially with these jumble sales I can still hear my mother: those are the best! But I simply haven't got a good strategy. I was in time (before it started of course) but when it opened I was totally overwhelmed.
Het rommelmarkt seizoen is op zijn hoogtepunt! Vandaag was het schitterend weer en ging ik naar Rommeldam, de jaarlijkse rommelmarkt georganiseerd door de hervormde kerk. Nu ga ik sinds mensenheugenis naar allerlei rommelmarkten, maar als ik naar zo eentje ten bate van een kerk ga, dan hoor ik mijn moeder zeggen: ten bate van....dat zijn de beste! Maar ik heb eigenlijk nooit zo'n goede strategie. Ik was op tijd, maar toen de markt open ging wist ik gewoon niet waar te beginnen!

Everybody just knows where to go, except for me. I kind of like everything, but that doesn't work here. The market is huge and everything is sorted, so there are booths with books, others with vases, earthenware, and there is a large furniture department:
Dat heb ik vaker: iedereen rent (ja letterlijk!) op zijn doel af en ik vind natuurlijk veel te veel leuk! Alles is gesorteerd, boeken bij boeken, glas bij glas en ga zo maar door. En dan is er ook nog een enorme afdeling meubels:

It wasn't until I saw a man with the most beautiful very old Christmas ornaments that I came to my senses. Okay, I missed those. Now what to do? When I cannot find anything on a market like the flea market in Rotterdam, which has its (sometimes quite expensive) treasures, but you have to be lucky, I always buy a few wooden spools. As I just hate to go home empty handed. So up I went to the booth with craft materials.
Pas toen ik een man zag met de meest geweldige oude kerstversiering kwam ik een beetje tot mezelf. Hoe nu verder? Wanneer ik helemaal niets kan vinden op de vlooienmarkt in Rotterdam, dan koop ik een paar houten klosjes met garen. Dus fluks naar de kraam met handwerkbenodigdheden. Daar had ik gelijk succes!

There I found those ribbons, the small embroidered case 'sleep well' and the loveliest lace I have ever seen: two dogs playing ball! (click to see it better!).
Ik vond deze gezellige lintjes en het grappigste antieke kant dat ik in tijden zag: twee honden die met de bal spelen!

Of course I found some wooden spools too!
Those Ackermann spools in front are really small, really cute.
Natuurlijk vond ik ook wat houten garenklosjes, de twee op de voorgrond zijn piepklein.

I use the spools to decorate with or to swap. I keep the motherload in apothecary jars, the large one for blacks and whites, the smaller one for the colored spools. I keep the empty ones in a small tin.
Ik gebruik de klosjes om mee te decoreren en de motherload bewaar ik in glazen stopflessen, ook decoratief natuurlijk! Ik vind altijd het meest zwarte en witte garenklosjes.

The largest spool I have is about 5", that is a wooden spool, I have one that is way bigger made out of cardboard:
Dit is de grootste klos, die vond ik in België en werd daar bobineke genoemd. Hij is ongeveer 12 centimeter lang, meer een bobine dus! Ik heb nog wel een grotere klos, maar die is weer niet van hout, maar van karton, een kringloopvondst.

American wooden spools sometimes have stamps on top, but European spools always have paper labels, some of them little pieces of art, like this one, a gift from Mrs. H. (I don't think she ever buys wooden spools because she cannot find anything else!).
Het leuke aan de klosjes zijn de etiketten, soms ware kunstwerkjes. Dit klosje kreeg ik van Mrs. H. (ik denk niet dat zij ooit een houten klosje koopt omdat ze anders niets kan vinden).

I also found this wooden needle case. The sewing notions just put me in a flow, after that I found all kind of neat stuff but I keep the rest for next time (a teaser obviously!).
Als dan eenmaal het eerste schaap over de brug is dan volgen er meer! Ik vond ook nog deze naaldenkoker, en de rest laat ik jullie een volgende keer zien (ja, dat noemen ze nou een teaser!)

Oh I love these needle cases, this one was a gift from one of my best blogging pals Stacey. Stacey just opened her new business, you can check her blog AND you can go there for real! Last week we decided to make an office at home for my husband, who is starting up a small company. So we made a design, choose paint and wallpaper. Bought a desk and some other stuff for the office. We traveled through our small country from traffic jam to traffic jam to pick up this:
Vorige week hebben we besloten dat het nieuwe bedrijf van mijn man een kantoor hier in huis krijgt, dus ontwerpje gemaakt, bureau gekocht en zo nog wat. We reisden het hele land door voor dit:

And I made a photoalbum (sorry forgot to take a photo) for these lovelies: my uncle and aunt.
In de tussentijd maakte ik een foto album (sorry vergeten een foto te maken) voor deze schatten: mijn oom en tante.

We celebrated their 50 years anniversary last Saturday.
We vierden hun gouden bruiloft afgelopen zaterdag.

Last Sunday I was at the car boot sale...Monday we bought fabric and since Tuesday
I'm fighting with 65 yards of fabric to make some curtains. Though I paused in the evening to see this:
Zondag wilde ik met alle geweld naar de car boot sale, toch altijd weer leuk. Maandag 60 (!) meter gordijnstof gekocht en daar ben ik nu mee aan het worstelen. Hoewel ik eerlijk moet toegeven dat ik in de avond pauzeerde voor deze film:

Het spijt me, maar ik heb gewoon nog geen tijd gehad om wie dan ook te bezoeken. Vandaag begint de meivakantie, waarvan ik zoals gewoonlijk met man en kinderen ga genieten. Over ongeveer 14 dagen zie ik je weer! Fijne Koninginnedag en een fijne meivakantie,

Hotel New York in Rotterdam

We are enjoying a beautiful spring over here. So last Friday my friend Z. and I took our bikes to the ferry and went to Rotterdam. 

Omdat het zulk mooi lenteweer is, pakten vriendin Z. en ik onze fietsen en de fast ferry en gingen fluks naar Rotterdam afgelopen vrijdag. Het centrum van Rotterdam werd, het mag bekend verondersteld worden, platgebombardeerd in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar ik kan me niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat de Rotterdammers nog altijd aan het afbreken (en opbouwen) zijn. Het Schieland huis hebben ze daarbij blijkbaar over het hoofd gezien: 

Rotterdam, I told you before, was bombed in the 2nd World War, the center was bombed away, but to tell you the truth, I always have a feeling that the Dutch themselves demolished even more, for the sake of modern architecture. I think that they forgot to break down the Schieland house:

I always love the details (and the colors!) of historic buildings. 

We visited an exposition about dutch couture here: 

Er gaat toch maar weinig boven mooie details en oude kleuren:

We bezochten een couture tentoonstelling, hier ^ een Fong Leng ontwerp. 

We hadden een heerlijke lunch in de Pappegay (aanrader!), nog wat gewinkeld en vervolgens weer op de fiets^ naar Hotel New York, het voormalige hoofdkantoor van de Holland Amerika lijn. Hier zijn duizenden Nederlanders, maar ook Polen, Russen en Duitsers aan hun reis naar de Nieuwe Wereld begonnen.

We had a lovely lunch, did some serious shopping and then we took our bikes again and went to Hotel New York for tea. I want to show this hotel especially to my American readers. Lots of you might have seen Ellis Island in New York, to see where your ancestors hit American ground, but where did they come from, where did they leave European soil? If your ancestors are Polish, Russian, German or Dutch of course they might have taken the boat to the States here: 

Now this building is known as Hotel New York but from the late 1800's until 1971 this was the headquarter of the Holland Amerika Lijn (=line). 

From here thousands and thousands of people left for the New World.

Nowadays the art nouveau building is surrounded by very modern buildings. 

Vandaag de dag wordt hotel New York omringd door grote nog modernere jongens.  

Inside there is old next to new as well. 

Binnen is er ook 'oud' naast nieuw: 

From a distance these look like modern tiles, but if you look carefully you can see that these are photos, printed on laminate, very clever. 

Van een afstandje lijken dit^ ook tegels, maar van dichtbij blijken het foto's te zijn afgedrukt op laminaat.
