While you were reading about the hot summer over here...this is what happened:

Typical dutch summer rains. I remember when I was about 7 ,my brother and I went to the local mall, to spend some money our mother gave us for the holidays. I bought a sketch book and some felt pen and when we were walking back home, the heavy rain surprised us. The orange cover of my sketch book started to run down on the white paper. But I didn't mind the rain, I could sketch all day inside now! And that's how I feel now too. It's nice to do some indoor activities too.

Last Sunday the weather was fine during the book market:

A bit cloudy but hot. The theme of this years' book market was:

'Schoolboards and Atlases'

But of course a lot of stalls just looked like this.

And some of them fit in by coincidence. Like this shop named 'Bagage' which means luggage. What a clever way to make and present your business cards. Of course their speciality is traveling books.

This is what I bought: a few German scraps, some old unwritten postcards, a book about the art of scissor cutting and a few magazines about the history and culture of my hometown Dordrecht. Perhaps you know that I'm a historian and I love to read about history of course.
And then about 4 books and some other stuff that isn't on the photo, as these are meant to be gifts.

Which brings us to the next subject; People asked me to show what I do with the flea market finds. First I love to buy presents over there, think birthday, think present in stead of a bunch of flowers, think swap and think give away. The rest:

Inside one of the cupboards in my bedroom there is this little vignette. I knew the clock would complete the picture. I love the "Schildkröt" souvenir dolls. The little music house (plays Edelweiss of course) and the weather house bring back so many happy memories. When I was a kid some of my class mates had these. Probably given by them by uncles, aunts or grandparents that had visited Switzerland, Austria or Germany. Of course I never had one of these, my family hated these kind of souvenirs, they hated to travel anyway. 'There is no place like home', could have been invented by them. So these remind me of the numerous times playing with school friends in my happy childhood.

Some people think that I buy everything that is on the photo of a flea market. No ladies, the little french postoffice didn't go home with me. I didn't even ask the price, which is probably more than 200 euros. Only the little bisquit girl went home to Dordrecht. Here she is now. Maybe I'll make a dress for her of vintage lace, but naked as she is, she is lying in the bathtub with her frozen Charlotte friend.

Vintage sewing supplies usually find a spot here. The needle books and the blue and white ribbon cards are finds that you saw recently. I change this when it gets too full, which is about now.

Next stop the cupboard in the garden.

Here is the small pitcher I found at the thriftshop

Hier vond het leesplankje een plekje.

And the reading board is above my favorite antique store in the large cupboard in the dining room.

The wicker suitcases are on this staple, I know I should make two staples, but where to put the paper in that case?

And this is inspiration for what I am planning to do with the children's iron board.
(do you see the potholders Barbara?). I bought this book 'Collections projects and ideas to display your treasures' at 'A million books' while I was in the States.

in mijn waskamertje in het souterrain

I have this small room in the basement. So I can dream along. Of course, first the Pip room, then my sons' bedroom after that....but I when I start I better have the supplies don't I?

It's vacation, finally, over here. Hubby is hiking through Iceland. Yesterday we had dinner -take away - in the television room, yes while watching, which we usually never do. I don't recommend it though: see what I ate yesterday evening ^. So if you don't hear from me I'm either having a lovely holiday or digesting the edgy part of this fork!
Have a great time! Hope to see you soon and it was nice to see you here, hugs LiLi M.

Hot Summer!

Hi you all out there!

I cannot remember when we were having such lovely weather in spring and in early summer as this year. It's hot 'round here. The kids start their last week school next week and then the vacation starts finally! Meanwhile we are already getting in the mood; having bbq's, drinking cooled wines in the garden etc. For you over there in the States; have a nice Independence Day weekend!

This is what I have been up to:

My lovely neighbour Z. was having tickets for the train that were almost expired so we had to go somewhere. Our destination was Amsterdam. We love the little shops over there in the 'Jordaan', as well as the brocante market 'Amsterdam Mont Martre' at the Noordermarkt.

Of course we bumped into a boars' head again. But this time it was a whopping 175 euros, you do remember us finding one for free in the streets of Antwerp don't you? If not, just check this.
The Amsterdam market usually is more expensive than markets over here, but there is a lot of good stuff to be found, like this:

A French antique post office.

Here is a peek inside. I've never seen this before.

Deze dame ging mee naar Dordrecht.
I couldn't resist this lovely little lady.

Does anyone need some inspiration what to do with yards and yards of ribbons lying in the closet? Or with a locker machine?

Last Sunday I went to Hoek van Holland to the car boot sale again.

I can never get enough of vintage Christmas ornaments, 2 euro this lot, including the sparkling Vrolijk Kerstfeest (Happy Christmas) in the previous photo. Just click on the photo to see more details.

I love these vintage playing cards and the little terriers.

And I was so happy to find this little German clock for 1,50.
Next time I'll show you where I have put all these lovelies, ok?

And Z and I went to see the Duchess ^, we loved it!

Next day my cousin arrived with her 2 small ones for a fun visit. (Here they're leaving...). We had a lovely day, talking, shopping and even a little crafting:

Here is my cousins' loot: she bought the 2 rose cups and made the 2 cushion covers as well as the peg bag over here.

And I made this tag to give to my cousins' neighbor who gave me a lot of Pip wallpaper. Now I hear you thinking: whatever happened to the Pip room, LiLi started around Christmas? Well my sewing machine has been repared last week, I am still searching for some second hand furniture. My daugher is already happy and you... you have to be patient :-P

Of course it isn't allways a bed of roses at LiLi's though I try to avoid drama over here. The last year I had a lot on my mind.
Pip?

The only thing I want to say here:
Is it really a coincidence that this bus stop is in the very street where the nastiest and most narrow minded woman I met in a long time works? (and I cannot avoid her, on the contrary I need her). I cannot help thinking that this is a token!

Let's end positive:

Tomorrow I will be hanging out here^
The Dordrecht book market, which is always fun,
the centre of Dordrecht will be one huge book market.
And of course for those who live closer to Belgium; tomorrow the Zandfeesten in Bruges start with an enourmous brocante market down town. Rumour has it that the French are buying here to sell in Lille in September.

Anyhow have fun, hope to visit you soon, thanks for your visit over here.
xoxo LiLi

xoxo LiLi M.

Second Annual Mad Tea Party.

Late? Late? What are you talking about, you funny little rabbit.

Well:

About this^ of course!
Don't you remember that you were almost the first to sign up when Vanessa invited you? It was May 18th. You were thinking that you would have plenty of time. Remember?

Of course I do. But how is it possible that I don't have anything ready for a blogpost yet?
'Aren't you supposed to be white?' I asked the rabbit to avert him a little.

Look at the flyer; Is that rabbit white?
and look at this:

My dear LiLi and other readers:
It doesn't matter what color the rabbit is, the story remains the same. I reveal another secret: neither should it matter to you my friends what color anybody has.

Now look at this again:

Yes, we shall be too late, Vanessa and the others will be sooo disappointed..the rabbit took his little hanky:

Whoooohoooo that poor Vanessa!

'Ah don't be silly', I replied, 'Vanessa is still asleep. We are having Saturday, but she is still having a groovy Friday Night.'

Don't you know:

Ah! What about time?

Time is a concept. It is hard to realize, but we people invented time. Before the 12th century the medieval western person didn't know the clock. Of course there was a concept of time; Every day a new day started, followed by an afternoon, an evening, a night. The seasons were following each other back then too. After 4 seasons it all started again. Time was like a circle. Life was a cycle. It was after inventing a clock that the time concept became linear: 9 pm today never comes back.

Time is an agreement: we have decided that it is 8.00 am over here, the minute I'm writing this down. It is 11.00 pm on the previous day, where Vanessa lives. That's an agreement too.

What I want to say is that you don't have to be in a rush all the time. Time traveling is possible nowadays; I can hop on a plane and save time, but you really don't save time that way. Just spend your time wise. As you think is wise. Time was invented to make life easier, to make it possible to make appointments. Don't let that agreement take over your life. Like they do at the Mad Hatters tea party, where it is always tea time, because the clock says so.
Relax!

Let's spend some precious Time at the other guests at Vanessa's Mad Tea Party.

'Take some more tea!'

Coucou mes copines!

Thanks for your enthusiastic response on my crowns! I felt like a queen, thank you!
Finally I have time for another post. I have been doing much totally uninteresting stuff, but let's get to one of my favorite summer hobbies; in French: la foire de brocante, in English something like the flea market, in Dutch de rommelmarkt:

Lieve allemaal, ik heb jullie de laatste dagen wat verwaarloosd, omdat ik het druk had met voor jullie totaal oninteressante zaken en met...mijn zomerhobby bij uitstek, het bezoeken van antiekmarkten, brocantes en wat dies meer zij;

First the loot of the Rotterdam flea market; I always find vintage buttons and ephemera over there, but somedays I have more luck, I had 3 flower frogs, a needle map and some other sewing things here. And the glass pebbles to create brooches or fridge magnets. This market is every Tuesday and Saturday.

The Nieuwkerks'market here in Dordrecht, a summer brocante. I think I will have a booth here later this Summer. I'll keep you posted on that.

The loot ^ in Dordrecht. I'm still not sure whether I have to remove that pincushion or not.

'In between' there is always the thift store. When I am THINKING of having my own booth I already need more stuff. So last weekend...

I went to my cousin and together we cruised a few Belgium foires de brocantes.

Didn't you love the cigar boxes in Wendy Addison's studio in 'Where women create' (the book)?
I always try to buy them for storage.

In Turnhout (Market every Sunday morning) I found the perfect fathers' day gift for only 10 cts.:
It says: 'Drive carefully daddy, I'm waiting for you'.
We still have to put in a photo of the kids and I bought buddies so that hubby can glue this to the dashboard.

At the Nieuwkerks' market I met Corry, who invited me to her own foire de brocante; she was having her garden sale this weekend. Her garden was beautifully decorated and her garden house too:

This wasn't the only cupboard filled with the most beautiful french blue and white brocante at Corry's.

Of course I didn't leave empty handed...

Yesterday it was the annual church sale of the Wilhelmina church around the corner...

I cannot remember when I started visiting 'les brocantes', as my parents were collectors too, and as a child I hated it, apart from the antique toys. When I was about 10 I was caught by the 'flea' bug. So I have seen quite a few markets, but no matter how many markets you visit, you can always find something that you have never seen before.

Here my 2 special finds of this week:

This looks like an ordinary rhine stone brooch.

But when you turn it around, it will reveal it's 'secret':

You can remove the clips; now you have an empty brooch and two shoe clips, how clever!

Another odd find:

I bought this at the Wilhelmina Church market. An old small tin.

The odd thing is that the 'bottom' of the tin is in the middle and the tin has two lids. I never have seen something like this. It's small tin, a little less than 2,5 " high.
Do you know what it is meant for?
Ooh these special finds, they make my day!
Ahhh vive la foire à la brocante!

I will visit you in the next couple of days!
Thanks for your visit over here, your comments are always appreciated.
xoxo LiLi M.

groetjes LiLi M.
