Second Annual Mad Tea Party.

Late? Late? What are you talking about, you funny little rabbit.

Well:

About this^ of course!
Don't you remember that you were almost the first to sign up when Vanessa invited you? It was May 18th. You were thinking that you would have plenty of time. Remember?

Of course I do. But how is it possible that I don't have anything ready for a blogpost yet?
'Aren't you supposed to be white?' I asked the rabbit to avert him a little.

Look at the flyer; Is that rabbit white?
and look at this:

My dear LiLi and other readers:
It doesn't matter what color the rabbit is, the story remains the same. I reveal another secret: neither should it matter to you my friends what color anybody has.

Now look at this again:

Yes, we shall be too late, Vanessa and the others will be sooo disappointed..the rabbit took his little hanky:

Whoooohoooo that poor Vanessa!

'Ah don't be silly', I replied, 'Vanessa is still asleep. We are having Saturday, but she is still having a groovy Friday Night.'

Don't you know:

Ah! What about time?

Time is a concept. It is hard to realize, but we people invented time. Before the 12th century the medieval western person didn't know the clock. Of course there was a concept of time; Every day a new day started, followed by an afternoon, an evening, a night. The seasons were following each other back then too. After 4 seasons it all started again. Time was like a circle. Life was a cycle. It was after inventing a clock that the time concept became linear: 9 pm today never comes back.

Time is an agreement: we have decided that it is 8.00 am over here, the minute I'm writing this down. It is 11.00 pm on the previous day, where Vanessa lives. That's an agreement too.

What I want to say is that you don't have to be in a rush all the time. Time traveling is possible nowadays; I can hop on a plane and save time, but you really don't save time that way. Just spend your time wise. As you think is wise. Time was invented to make life easier, to make it possible to make appointments. Don't let that agreement take over your life. Like they do at the Mad Hatters tea party, where it is always tea time, because the clock says so.
Relax!

Let's spend some precious Time at the other guests at Vanessa's Mad Tea Party.

'Take some more tea!'

Coucou mes copines!

Thanks for your enthusiastic response on my crowns! I felt like a queen, thank you!
Finally I have time for another post. I have been doing much totally uninteresting stuff, but let's get to one of my favorite summer hobbies; in French: la foire de brocante, in English something like the flea market, in Dutch de rommelmarkt:

Lieve allemaal, ik heb jullie de laatste dagen wat verwaarloosd, omdat ik het druk had met voor jullie totaal oninteressante zaken en met...mijn zomerhobby bij uitstek, het bezoeken van antiekmarkten, brocantes en wat dies meer zij;

First the loot of the Rotterdam flea market; I always find vintage buttons and ephemera over there, but somedays I have more luck, I had 3 flower frogs, a needle map and some other sewing things here. And the glass pebbles to create brooches or fridge magnets. This market is every Tuesday and Saturday.

The Nieuwkerks'market here in Dordrecht, a summer brocante. I think I will have a booth here later this Summer. I'll keep you posted on that.

The loot ^ in Dordrecht. I'm still not sure whether I have to remove that pincushion or not.

'In between' there is always the thift store. When I am THINKING of having my own booth I already need more stuff. So last weekend...

I went to my cousin and together we cruised a few Belgium foires de brocantes.

Didn't you love the cigar boxes in Wendy Addison's studio in 'Where women create' (the book)?
I always try to buy them for storage.

In Turnhout (Market every Sunday morning) I found the perfect fathers' day gift for only 10 cts.:
It says: 'Drive carefully daddy, I'm waiting for you'.
We still have to put in a photo of the kids and I bought buddies so that hubby can glue this to the dashboard.

At the Nieuwkerks' market I met Corry, who invited me to her own foire de brocante; she was having her garden sale this weekend. Her garden was beautifully decorated and her garden house too:

This wasn't the only cupboard filled with the most beautiful french blue and white brocante at Corry's.

Of course I didn't leave empty handed...

Yesterday it was the annual church sale of the Wilhelmina church around the corner...

I cannot remember when I started visiting 'les brocantes', as my parents were collectors too, and as a child I hated it, apart from the antique toys. When I was about 10 I was caught by the 'flea' bug. So I have seen quite a few markets, but no matter how many markets you visit, you can always find something that you have never seen before.

Here my 2 special finds of this week:

This looks like an ordinary rhine stone brooch.

But when you turn it around, it will reveal it's 'secret':

You can remove the clips; now you have an empty brooch and two shoe clips, how clever!

Another odd find:

I bought this at the Wilhelmina Church market. An old small tin.

The odd thing is that the 'bottom' of the tin is in the middle and the tin has two lids. I never have seen something like this. It's small tin, a little less than 2,5 " high.
Do you know what it is meant for?
Ooh these special finds, they make my day!
Ahhh vive la foire à la brocante!

I will visit you in the next couple of days!
Thanks for your visit over here, your comments are always appreciated.
xoxo LiLi M.

groetjes LiLi M.

A crown every day...

Hi everybody!
Thanks for all your lovely comments on my last post. Today, my lovely friends, I am going to show you my crowns as it is "Show me your crown day' hosted by the lovely Andrea at Vintage Bella Studio.

Vandaag gaan we eens naar mijn kronen kijken, ja want vandaag is het 'show me your crown' dag, uw gastvrouw is Andrea van Vintage Bella Studio. Zoals jullie inmiddels wel weten is er geen 'show me your...' te bedenken waar ik niet aan mee zou kunnen doen!

Let's start: We gaan beginnen:

Op de schoorsteenmantel 3 kroontjes.
The mantle in the dining room. I'm counting 3 crowns.

Look my Joséphine is dressed up for the occasion

Of course diamonds are a girls' best friend, but Joséphine has an eye for the finest pearls too.

Maar voor mij voldoet simpele strass.
To me simple rhinestones will do...

These brooches are great to craft with;
Here is a part of the banner that I made for my cousins 46th birhtday

And this is the card I made for Karla's aunt Caroline 100th birhtday last year.
Maybe it is a good reminder to say that was the 26th of June.
This is Caroline herself wearing a crown.

And this is Czar Nicolas II wearing his crown on a portfolio that I made for Carol from Boxwood Cottage in a swap last year.

Don't you see? Everybody always looks happy wearing a crown. Look how happy my hubby looked when he got these two crowns from Santa in 2007 to decorate with!

The crowns are now lying on the mantle, but

My king of styling uses them everywhere...

You can buy a crown or a tiara, but you can make one too.
I think here in blogland Gabriela is the Queen of making crowns. I made one myself for my blogging friend Elizabeth last year:

It wasn't difficult, I used a piece of wallpaper that I glued on some cardboard.
Embellished the crown with pearls and a crepe paper circle, some glitters and a E. I sewed an elastic ribbon on the crown et voilà: one size fits all!

The wallpaper isn't vintage but glittery, vinyl but so kitchy that it is very special.
I 'stole' it at Praxis, a hardware store. They only have precut samples of wallpaper over there, but when they had these rolls, there were just some opened rolls and somebody before me obviously had taken a piece of the wallpaper, so I started to tear a piece of each roll too.
'What do you think you are doing??' the manager unkindly asked me. 'I'm tearing off a sample' I replied. 'Now I cannot sell these rolls anymore, while you have torn them' he told me angry, but I told him, that he couldn't before my visit and why didn't they make precut squares as samples and leave the rolls closed huh?
It took a while before my hubby stopped asking me: "Did you take your knife with you?" every time we went to Praxis.

Not only crowns inside the house, but outside too

Ook in de herft.
Fall

En ook in de winter.
Winter...

Well there is a reason for wearing a crown every day.

They always remind me of my mother who used to tell my brother and me;
Always put the crown on somebody else's head, never take it off. As we were always saying nasty things to each other. And I know that she was right.

Not only do I try to put on the crown on your head but I'm wearing my tiara with proud every day too.

Natuurlijk wilden deze meisjes niet achterblijven.
And of course; these girls wanted to join the fun too!

Have a happy show me your crown day!
Don't forget to visit Andrea and to take a look at all other participants.
Thanks for visiting me and don't forget to put up that crown on somebody else's head today!
xoxo LiLi M.

Ik wens iedereen een gezellige 'show me your crown' dag.
xoxo LiLi M.

Focus!

Hi!!

We had such lovely weather that I think almost every Dutch blogger posts less than usual, at least I do! There was a Pentecost vacation that came as a surprise to me, who invents these vacations? One kid had to go to school, the other didn't, so it wasn't all partying. Though it is almost the end of the school year with a lot of last this or last that, sporting competition, singing competition and so on, so it is hard to focus on the things that still have to be done.

This piece of art 'Focus' was made by my blogfriend Jeanette.
Jeanette is one of my favorite bloggers because she has a great sense of humor and she is a very wise woman too. Beginning 2009 there were a lot of bloggers who chose a word fitting for 2009. Jeanette asked us what word we should choose and apparantly I chose 'Focus', as I get easily distracted, in fact so easy that I even forgot that my word for 2009 is 'Focus' lol!
But now I have a beautiful piece of art in my study ( I had to take a photo outside because it was getting late and I forgot to take photos, yes I have to focus!) that keeps me focussed.
Thanks so much Jeanette!

Last Sunday I visited my first car boot sale here in Hoek van Holland.
Now I hear that there are a lot of car boot sales in the Netherlands already, I guess I have been sleeping under a rock, I'll stay focussed on this one.
The weather couldn't be better...over 300 participants and 10.000 babyclothes, millions of rejected toys and other uninteresting stuff...

But there were some nice boots too, admission was free, so one couldn't complain. I'm a real bargain hunter. I really don't need anything, so it is sports to get one or two euro finds. And this is my haul:

You can click on the photo to see more details.

Or you can look here ^
The small box is a box for Baptism candies, probably from Belgium.
I think that I told you before that my Belgium relatives call those candies babies' poops, in Flemish 'kinekes kak'. When my uncle was born in 1929, my grandmothers' sister Laurence showed him to his sisters, my mother (almost 3) and my aunt. And oooops out of the napkin fell some candies; the first baby poops were chocolates! This amazing happening was my mothers' first memory! Of course my grandmother didn't need such a box, they probably didn't have the money for it either.

Some vintage baubles and some silver numbers. You can put them on your glass at a reception to remember which glass is yours. I didn't notice at the market that they are not complete. I'm missing the 4... well it is hard to stay focused on that kind of details when you are having fun at the car boot sale.

And this vintage, my bff used to have one exactly like this, 'leesplankje' or reading board.
This is a method that teaches reading. You need a small box with alphabet letters too (already in my possession) Now you have to put the correct letters on the word; a a p on aap = monkey, etc. Why they use so many names in stead of the correct words I don't know. Was this also a teaching method in your language?

I got this award from Victoria who has revamped her lovely blog recently, go check Florence and Mary! I always am in doubt what to do next, but Victoria made a nice suggestion. As I like all of my commenters just as much I give this award to the first 7 commenters of my last post. If you feel offended and think that you should deserve this award too...you are right...just grab it... the blog police isn't watching anyway!

The first 7 commenters are:

Marianne @ Songbird's nesting
Lia @ I found my home
Wil @ Casa Nostra
Marina @ Only cute things
Beth @ Gathering Dust
Gabriela @ Gabriela Delworth
Constance @ Rochambeau

(and of course the rest of you who wants to take this...)

I spent a lot of time sitting and dreaming in the garden, but I didn't take photos and I didn't visit you! Time to start focussing...maybe next time...just wait and see. Oh and I definitely will pay more attention to your blogs too, I will visit each and everyone of you asap. Cu!
Thanks for visiting, xoxo LiLi
