Eureka!

Met ingang van deze week is dan iedereen hier weer naar school of aan het werk, ik moet nog wat uitgestelde afspraken inhalen...
End of August our son went back to school. Last week our daughter started school again too. So you would think everything is back to normal for me again. In fact I postponed some appointments during our vacation, so this week it was time to go here:


Tijd om naar Villa Eureka te gaan, bij mij om de hoek, gebouwd in 1881 en totaal gerenoveerd in 2008.
This is Villa Eureka, built in 1881, right around the corner of my house.
The villa was totally renovated in 2008. Before looked like this:


Zo zag het er voorheen uit. Alle aangebouwsels zijn verwijderd en de villa is nu geheel geverfd in Dordtse kleuren. Ook is er een modern stuk aangebouwd. (foto Van Mill stucadoors, zie onderstaande link)

Now it is totally renovated on the inside and I was kindly shown around here, by the pharmacist of pharmacy 'Merwede'.


Ik werd rondgeleid door de apotheker uit Apotheek Merwede die ook in dit pand zit. Hij liet me alle gerestaureerde en deels gerestaureerde plafonds zien en de prachtig gerenoveerde parketvloer. Voor meer details kun je op de foto klikken.
The painted ceilings were restored if that was possible and the same was done to the wooden floors (parquet). Do click on the photos to see more details.


Originele details bleven waar mogelijk gespaard, zoals de schouw en spiegel hier in apotheek 'Merwede".
Original features were kept if possible, like the mantelpiece and the mirror here, in pharmacy 'Merwede'.


Aan de zij- en achterkant werd een nieuwe serre achtige constructie aangebouwd, zodat de villa in zijn geheel bleef bestaan, maar sommige delen nu binnen zijn geworden in plaats van buiten. Ik juich dat toe. Het is vaak zo gemakkelijk en goedkoop om te slopen, maar dingen die vernietigd zijn komen helaas nooit meer terug. Ik vind dat we zuinig moeten zijn op ons mooie erfgoed.
On the back side of the villa a big conservatory like new building was attached. So that the former outside of the villa now is the inside of the larger building. The villa was kept in its original shape, which is always important I think. It's easy to change these buildings, but often some features get lost that are never to be found again. I think we have to cherish our heirlooms.


En waarvoor bezocht ik deze prachtige villa? Voor een bezoekje aan de tandarts, die net in beeld springt. De komende weken word ik flink onderhanden genomen, want ik heb 2 nieuwe kronen nodig. Villa Eureka huisvest tegenwoordig een apotheek, huisartsen, vroedvrouwen en andere medisch specialisten waaronder mijn tandarts^.
Are you jealous of me, looking around in Villa Eureka? Actually I came to see him^ and he is going to torture me for weeks from now, as I need two new crowns. :-(
Villa Eureka now hosts all kind of medical workers, like doctors, psychiatrists, a pharmacy, midwives and of course my dentist, who sneaks into this photo^.


Tijdens de vakantie heb ik natuurlijk weer een hoop rommelwinkels en -markten bezocht. Ik loop hopeloos achter met het showen van de aanwinsten, maar dat komt wel weer. De kaarten van het Zwarte Pietspel waar ik mijn blogpost mee opende vond ik in België. Bij de kringloop vond ik dit^ zilveren avondtasje.
During the vacation I visited a lot of markets and thrift stores. I am totally behind showing to you what I found. I bought the cards I started this blog post with too, I'll show you more of that later. This^ evening purse I bought at the goodwill store, some weeks ago. Of course I liked the outside, but look what is on the inside:


Toen ik het openmaakte bleek niet alleen het spiegeltje erin te zitten, maar ook nog kaartjes voor een concert in het Raimund theater in Wenen! Gedateerd 3 november 1977, misschien was dat nog wel voordat jij geboren werd. Ik probeerde rond die tijd punk te zijn.
Het klavertje vier zag ik in eerste instantie een beetje over het hoofd.
I loved the tickets of a concert in the Raimund theater in Vienna dated November 3rd 1977! That must have been before you were born, I was hanging around trying to be punk back then. What I kind of overlooked was the four leaved clover which was also inside the purse.
But since then:


Maar sinds die tijd lacht het geluk mij toe: ik won dit school bord bij Janet van Shabbyfufu. De lijst beschilderde zij zelf, prachtig en hartelijk dank!
I won this black board, which still has to be hung, at Shabbyfufu's. Thanks a million Janet, it was awfully sweet to send this beautifully hand painted black board to me.


Bij Miss Sandy's blog Quill cottage won ik een geweldig art journal.

Het oude patroonpapier heb ik gewoon glad gestreken om het opnieuw te kunnen gebruiken. Recycling is my middle name.
I have put the pattern paper straight again, I love to recycle. Do click this photo to see everything in detail. Not only did the lovely Miss Sandy sent me the art journal, but she also sent three paper rolls, a whole folder filled with ephemera, some lovely punched items and a wonderful thank you card. What inspiration! I have taken this journal in my hands over and over again, since its arrival. It's just too good to be true!

In het kleine view master zakje voor op zaten deze ^ dingetjes. Leuk!
On the front is a small view master pocket, how creative, which was filled with these^, just awesome!


En de grote map was gevuld met deze ephemera, geweldig! Ik krijg gelijk zin om te gaan knutselen.

Miss Sandy is planning to open an Etsy store where she is going to sell the rolls of music paper, vintage wallpaper and ledger paper and also ephemera folders filled with goodies, both like these shown above. I even won three more prizes, more about that in future posts, I couldn't understand my luck until suddenly; Eureka! I thought of the purse and four leaved clover I bought!

Miss Sandy is van plan om een Etsy winkel te openen. Hou haar in de gaten want voor je het weet zijn de mappen en de rollen met ephemera alweer uitverkocht.

Ik won nóg drie prijzen, waarover later. Ik begreep niets van mijn plotselinge geluk, tot ineens; Eureka! ik weer dacht aan het klavertje vier dat ik gevonden had. Het werkt echt! Als het nu ook eens helpt bij de tandarts...
Ik heb altijd een beetje opstart drukte aan het begin van het schooljaar, als ik je de laatste tijd verwaarloosd heb, dan weet je nu hoe dat komt, maar ik bezoek iedereen zo spoedig mogelijk, tot dan, bedankt voor je bezoek aan mijn hoekje op het internet, xoxo LiLi M.

Uitdragerij Arie Boer

Eén van de leuke dingen van het wonen hier, is dat je zo op het platteland bent.
Onze favoriete route is de Lek en Linge route.

What I enjoy about living here is that the country is nearby. We, hubby and I, love to stroll through the Alblasserwaard, which we think is really beautiful. We often drive the Lek and Linge route.

While we were driving the Lek and Linge route, my mind was lingering about why a swan divorce doesn't exist, all of a sudden we arrived here:

a funny looking old building with lots and lots of gates. Isn't that balcony ready to drop of?

Welkom bij uitdragerij Arie Boer!
Is this really the entrance gate?

Welcome to the uitdragerij of Arie Boer and his family. I think uitdragerij is best translated as salvation yard or junk yard. It was about 15 years ago that hubby and I visited this junk yard, for the last time.


Toen wij hier 15 jaar geleden kwamen zag de hele uitdragerij er zó uit.
At that time the whole place looked like this ^. Hubby didn't want to stay inside back then for two reasons, one was that you would never get out alive in case of fire or 'something happening'. The other reason was that you couldn't buy anything, simply because you couldn't reach it.
Since then things have changed immensely at the Boer place:


Nu is Arie Boer gepensioneerd en hebben zijn kinderen alle koopwaar gesorteerd, hekken bij hekken....
Arie has retired (and started all over again elsewhere). His children have sorted out everything.

Now it is a joy to visit this salvation yard:


Wij vonden het nu een plezier de uitdragerij te bezoeken.


De directie kamer, wat een plaatje, een zoon van Arie Boer, zijn klompen staan er nog zwaait hier nu de scepter.
Inside things have improved too. I cannot even remember this room, probably because there was a pile of a 1000 copper candelabras in here. Now it is the office of Arie's son who is in charge of the uitdragerij and who kindly gave me permission to take as many photos as I wished.


In plaats van stapels en stapels troep zijn er nu stijlkamers gecreëerd.
Instead of piles and piles of junk, there are style rooms inside now. The right lower photo is taken at Leida Boer's shop (another Boer family member) in the same building.


Behalve hekwerk en tuinornamenten is de familie Boer ook gespecialiseerd in deuren.
Besides old iron and garden ornaments, doors are a specialty:

Maar wij vinden het leuker om de deuren in hun volle glorie te zien, zoals hier op de begane grond.
Of course we prefer to see them like this^, at the ground floor.

Vol inspiratie, maar zonder een cent uitgegeven te hebben keerden wij weer huiswaarts, ik ben en blijf een stadsmeisje.
We drove back again to the city, filled with inspiration, though we bought nothing this time. I love the country, but I will always be a city girl.

Tonight Z. and I will go to the free outside cinema, here down town.



Vanavond gaan Z. en ik naar de gratis buitenfilm, als het weer het toelaat, dit keer Slumdog Millionaire, kijk dat vind ik nou zo leuk van de stad.
Let's hope the weather is nice to watch Slumdog Millionaire. Last time we saw Woody Allan's 'Vicky Christina Barcelona', we had a lot of fun, though we both wouldn't recommend this film to anybody! Hope you will enjoy your weekend too, have fun, xoxo LiLi M.

I thought of you swap

Hello you lovelies out there,

I guess you must have seen something already of this amazing ' I thought of you' swap that was hosted by my blogging pal Stephenie. I was paired with Kitty of Reflections from the Stone Nest and I couldn't have wished for a better partner. Just look and see, are you seated?

hoi allemaal, enige tijd geleden deed ik mee aan de I thought of you swap, georganiseerd door Stephenie. Kitty van Reflections from the stone nest was mijn partner en ik heb het geweldig getroffen:

Het begon al toen ik de doos opende. Prachtig pastelkleurig vloepapier. Ik vind die zwaluv die dat envelopje vast houdt ook zo leuk .
When I opened the box I was already happy! Look at that tissue paper that isn't available in these pastel colors over here, the swallow and the little envelope, so much lovely details.

En na de eerste laag papier vond ik dit! Geweldig! Zo'n hoed is hier helemaal niet te krijgen, fantastisch.
After removing the first layer of tissues this was revealed and I thought I fainted. A vintage millinery hat...how gorgeous is that? I love it! No plucking here, no way!

Ik kreeg een hele bundel met inkt beschreven boekhoudpapier uit de 19de eeuw, zucht, hier eentje gefotografeerd, als stapel krijg je toch een ander effect.

Next a big role of ledger papers. I only took a photo of one over here, so that you can see how beautiful this is.

En hier wat antieke verendecoraties. Geweldig, de kleur van die struisvogelveren is zo mooi.

Here you can see there is more of that beautiful paper. And two beautiful antique feather decorations. The small piece of vintage wallpaper was the cover of the role.

Ik kreeg ook nog een hele bundel vintage behang, kwijl...

And Kitty sent me a role of vintage wallpaper, which you can see more detailed if you scroll on, as I have used the various pieces as backgrounds to take the next photos.

Dit is zo'n apart kunstwerkje. Het is een hart van gesteven textiel met daarop een klos garen gebonden, met oude kant.

Look at this piece of art. Of course you can click on the photos as always. A heart with a wooden spool of thread tied on with vintage lace. It is even more beautiful in real life.

Dit mooie doosje heeft Kitty zelf gemaakt.

En dit zat er allemaal in, ik dacht dat ik flauwviel!
Could you believe that? Just my cup of tea and how incredibly generous of Kitty.
And we are still at the beginning! I was having heart beats when I was unpacking, I think you can imagine that!


We zijn nog maar aan het begin...
A vintage jewel container, how sweet and that ribbon with the millinery flower makes it even sweeter. Just the box would have been great but of course:

Kitty filled it to the brim with the most amazing goodies! Take a closer look:


Ik vind alles leuk, maar de bloemen en de speld met de naaibenodigdheden zijn toch favoriet!
Again vintage millinery flowers, I have a supply right now, Kitty knew that these were incredibly difficult to find here. I adore everything, but my favorite is the sewing supplies pin in the middle.


Dit zijn ook grappige dingen, om druppels van kaarsen op te vangen en alles was zo leuk ingepakt!
I don't know how these are called, these are meant to put on a candlelabra to catch the drips of a burning candle. Kitty has packed everything in a gorgeous way. All presents are pieces of art of themselves. I have kept these just like this. It is so beautiful!


Ik krijg ook nooit genoeg van vintage lint. zucht en kwijl.
At this point I was feeling like I had entered a secret treasure room, there was no end, there were still things to unpack...and again stunning things, that are always on my wish list; vintage ribbons; just click the photo to see the three bundles of seam binding, the silk ribbon and the velvet ribbon, with the rhinestone buckle. I cannot still cannot believe this.


Het antieke borduursel en de kraagjes vind ik ook helemaal geweldig.
Don't you love this embroidered piece, the antique collars and the vintage handkerchiefs. Yes handkerchiefs, though you see only one in the photo, the other was used to wipe my tears!


En kijk eens naar alle kaarten, brieven en wat dies meer zij, ik heb zo'n zin om hier mee te gaan knutselen.
I was spoiled so much, but still we haven't reached the end. Look at all the vintage ephemera Kitty sent me. TDF! Look at the calling cards, the vintage postcards, the photos, well see for yourself. I cannot wait to use these!


Kitty heeft veel tijd gestoken in het bij elkaar zoeken van alles, maar ook in het inpakken, het was allemaal prachtig. Misschien kunnen jullie je ook nog laten inspireren. Bedankt Kitty voor alles, ik zal aan je blijven denken, wellicht was dat de bedoeling van Stephenie, die ik ook hartelijk wil danken.
I told you before; Kitty did a gorgeous job packing all these things that I really love. And a package is even better when it's packed well, don't you think? Here are the packages Kitty made me, don't they look wonderful? Even now they are empty.

It might sound like a cliché, but words just cannot express how happy I was and how touched to receive this package. It is all so me, even my husband was amazed that it was so spot on. Thank you Kitty for being so generous and for putting so much time and effort in gathering and packing all these lovelies. To me this is a swap I will never forget and I will be thinking about you, Kitty forever. I guess that is what Stephenie meant when she thought of this I thought of you swap ;-). Thank you Stephenie for hosting this lovely swap!
