Silver Sunday part 4: a few of my favorite things

Welkom op zilveren deze zilveren zondag. Vandaag voor de laatste keer, hoewel ik geloof dat er een maandelijks vervolg komt. As a child I always thougth that the book was really filled with silverware like this:

Het liedje Kortjakje heb ik altijd verkeerd begrepen. Ik dacht dat zij haar boek vol met zilverpapier had, om het mooi glad te krijgen en er dan mee te gaan knutselen. (Moest ik toch 2 repen chocolade opeten om dit overtuigend op de foto te krijgen, jullie worden bedankt!) Inmiddels is gebleken dat ik niet de enige was die dat verkeerd begreep, hè Natacha? Het ging natuurlijk om een bijbel, met zilver bekleed, zoals die uit de collectie van mijn moeder.
These are the covers of two chocolate bars (it takes sometimes sacrifices to blog). This is what we used to call silver paper. We used to save up everything for crafting. There were no Michaels' or other hobby shops in the area where I lived in the 60ties.
It took me years to understand that little Short Jacket took her bible to church:

Nog meer zilver met een verhaal: 1 van de 2 is het verlovingscadeau van mijn opa aan mijn oma. Maar welke? Mijn moeder verzamelde zoveel erbij dat je niet meer weet wat nu wat is. Ach, we bewaren ze allebei maar, met dit verhaal.
I promised you some favorites, well one of the silver sugar spoons is a favorite. My grandfather gave it as a present to my grandmother when they engaged. My mother decided to add one other sugar spoon to her collection. Now I don't know which one is the present and which one is the ordinary spoon without a story. I just keep them both with this story.

Silver Sunday is walking down Memory Lane to me.


Van mijn andere oma kregen wij altijd een zilveren gulden of rijksdaalder en we hebben ze nog! Ze maken een veel mooier geluid dan nikkel. Ach, dit is weer zo typisch mijn oma die natuurlijk gelijk door had dat dat zilveren geld veel leuker was om te bewaren en veel waardevoller zou worden!
Until 1967 our coins were either silver or gold. After 1967 most of the coins were made of nickel. The silver coins got more valuable than they were named to be worth and in the early seventies they were discontinued. My grandmother used to give us silver money, she saved them up when they became scarce. And we saved them too. I love the sound of silver money. My grandmother died in 1975, but I have so many happy memories. It was so her to gave these instead of nickel. I am not a coin collector, but these are special to me.

Nog even wat favorieten: hier twee piepkleine dingetjes uit de speelgoed kast. Het lepeltje is ongeveer 4 centimeter lang.
Small silver items in my antique toy collection, like the spoon, only 1.5" and the small 'grabber' for taking sugar lumps.

Sorry, het is een donkere dag, ik hoop dat je het gehavende zoutstrooiertje dat mijn moeder voor een dubbeltje ofzo op de kop tikte kunt zien.
A tattered salt shaker my mother once bought for less than a quarter is useful in the toy store. My photos are dark, but we have very dull weather today.

Of course my dolls like some jewelry too. This is a tiny silver locker.
