Having a brocante weekend!

Last weekend I was at my cousins' and we went to three brocante markets. We had so much fun and we bought an awful lot. I even have bought much more than pictured here, but these are mainly presents, so...
That's a pity, no? That's why I have something else; a little contest. You will find it at the end of this blog post.

To start: every thing on this table. Yep there was a farmers' market too. So I bought the pumpkin and the basket with violets as well (and a very, very big purple chrysanthemum) . The white and blue jugs, bowl and pots are enamel ware. Not immaculate (far from that), but they will look great on my rack or in the garden. Especially the jugs remind me of France, though they have been bought in Belgium. In fact all flea markets in Belgium seems to be more French to me than any flea market in France!

Originally these jugs were sold as parts of washing sets. It's perfect and signed and priced at 2 euros!

Am I a genuine button floozy or not? I do hope there are a few button beauties in that jar.

Close up of the mother of pearl buttons, other buttons and wooden spools, all filled with white or black thread.

Two little vintage babies, one is a German Ary doll. Both lying on a 50-ties plate. I used to collect this kind of service. It's Fris, a dutch brand. I have sold a lot of it, but I still cannot resist to buy it when it's cheap. I paid 10 cents for this little plate about 5".

Some vintage mercury glass Christmas decorations. At Barbara's I found an ornaments calculator. I need about 700 (vintage) Christmas ornaments, so I can keep buying them for a while.

Vintage Easter decorations, these are German and hollow, meant to be filled with candy.

I bougth three wooden boxes. And I don't know how many baubles and a few old watches, keys, bits and bobs.

Ephimera lot: old photo's, childrens books, a french cooking book and a book about french queens, both beginning 20th century. At home I discovered  a lot of drawings of French queens in the book, except for the Marie Antoinette drawing, she has been torn out :-(

I was sooooo happy to find these; all vintage lace and silk ribbons.
Here is my little contest:
Guess how many meters or yards I have bought. To help you there are 15 different kinds shown here, and I have at least a meter of every kind, in fact much more. Write your guess number in yards or meters in your comments and you will make a chance to win a little ribbon package. The winner will be the one who is closest to the actual total. The contest ends October 27th 24.00 hrs CET.
This is not my October give away but just a little game in between.

Do you want to know what this girl is hiding behind her back?
Find out at Hop Hop Jingle Boo. I have made this paper doll and a couple of other things for Debra as a part of the Halloween Flight Night Swap.

Thanks for visiting me, don't forget to guess how much metres or yards of vintage ribbons I bought last weekend, good luck! Hugs, LiLi.

PS: this posts' dutch word is vlooienmarkt=flea market.
Vlo=flea-->vlooien=fleas
markt=market, yes there is another easy word!

and you see we Dutch tend to invent new words, not using two existing words for one meaning, but make one word with another meaning of two already existing words. Confused? Just stay tuned and you will speak and think like we Dutch in no time.

The witch balance

Hello and welcome everybody! If you are here for the Halloween party that is hosted by the lovely one and only Vanessa Valencia you are on the right spot. Welcome at LiLi M.'s! As you all probably will know we don't celebrate Halloween over here in the Netherlands, so I will tell you a tricky tale instead.

One day, early October my doorbell rang and look who came to visit me:

It's that handsome young officer (whow)!
Het is die knappe buurtagent (wauw)!

Me: (sweet voice) Can I help you sir?
Ik (zoetgevooisd): Kan ik u helpen meneer?
The police man (P): I want to make some inquiries Ma'am. To be short: the neighbours suspect you of being a witch!

Me: Me? A witch???? What on earth makes them think that?
Ik? Een Heks? Hoe komen ze daar nu bij?
P: Dunno Ma'am, perhaps it's the hat.
Me: But you have a kind of a hat too and even my bird wears a hat:

P: They have seen your laundry line Ma'am and they think it is so strange...the dress, the gloves,

the shoes.....
de schoenen...
Now I have to interrupt him:
Nu moet ik hem toch even onderbreken:

Me: What's wrong with me shoes, boy?? These are genuine Jan Jansen shoes!
Wat is er mis met die schoenen? Dat zijn originele Jan Jansen schoenen!

(I didn't tell him I wasn't wearing these on purpose):

P: I'm sorry, it isn't the shoes, it's the fact that you are hanging them on you laundry line AND that you are wearing a wig AND that you are wearing gloves. Now everybody has read Roald Dahls "The witches", so we all know what that means!

Well what do I have to do now ladies?
Confession? Denial? Suing those neighbours?
Mmm... as always the answer was nearby; about 55 kilometers (34 miles) away from my hometown. In the medieval town of Oudewater..., wait I'll take you there:

Gezicht op Oudewater by Willem Koekkoek (1839-1893)

Oh no, no time travelling now!
Just let's go to Oudewater...

Some sight seeing?
the City hall ^:
Een rondleiding?
Het stadhuis ^:

Too bad it was raining cats and dogs.
And some broom was falling out of the sky as well!

But not due to the weather alone I should have considered other means of transportation...Here we are at the only place in Europe where one can get proof that one is not a witch!

Inside is the one and only reliable Heksenwaag!
Heksenwaag means witch balance, though the word Heksenwaag is old fashioned, we will not use that in our lessons!
Hier binnen bevindt zich de Heksenwaag:

These are the scales! They date of 1482 and were meant to weigh goods. During the witch prosecutions in Europe the weighing of people came into fashion. As witches were supposed to fly on their brooms, they should be light. Lighter than any average person who couldn't fly. In 1545 there was such a witch trial in the village of Polsbroek (near Oudewater). Emperor Charles the fifth, who happened to pass by, refused to believe that the prosecuted woman really was too light as the corrupt weigh master was trying to make believe everybody. He gave Oudewater the privilege to a fair weighing trial. It is and was the only place in Europe where you can get yourself weighed and get your 'Certificaet van Weghinge', in old Dutch which means your 'certificate of weight' in modern English. Nobody was ever convicted witch here...until.....well I will not reveil the end of the story.

So a witch would be lighter than a 'normal' person. Usually the line was drawn at 50 kilo's (110 pounds, hey didn't the old fashioned Barbie weighed 110?) but the proportion of your body was also taken in consideration.
Well, the last decades I have been working soooo hard to get way passed that 50 kilo's. After years of hard work I was definitely and undoubtedly in the safe zone, I was thinking. But wearing the hat, the broom, laughing too loud, having eyes that are too blue, knowing too much about herbs and liking black cats, I received this certificate:

Yeah, yeah I have made my weight unclear, no one has to know it is still under 50! ;-)
The word Heks means Witch and it isn't an old fashioned word at all!

Well, I didn't mourn too long about this verdict. We went straight to the neighbours " 't Backertje" where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. I can recommend the salad with goat cheese, the pea soup and the nassi (indonesian dish). I need to maintain these shapes.

You can weigh yourself online at the website of the Museum de Heksenwaag
Knowing a little dutch is recommended;
first choose your shape (shape=figuur)
enter your name (name=naam) push ok
choose your favorite animal (animal=dier) ( I wouldn't pick the cat!)
write down your age (leeftijd) push ok
and your length in centimers (length=lengte, you'll find a converter here)
and your shoesize (shoesize=schoenmaat, converter over here)

Then all is filled in, (alle gegevens zijn ingevuld). Are you ready to be weighed on the scales? (Bent u klaar om op de weegschaal te gaan staan?)(push ok again);
The Result =Het resultaat;
either: U een heks! You a witch (they have forgotten the word are)
or U bent gelukkig geen heks (Luckily you are no witch).
Please let me know whether I'm the only witch in blogland!

Thanks for visiting my blog and thank you

Chasing pumpkins

Denkend aan Holland
Zie ik breede rivieren
traag door oneindig
laagland gaan...

Thinking of Holland
I picture broad rivers
meandering through
unending lowland.....

uit/from: H. Marsman
'Herinnering aan Holland'
english translation by Michael Longley

Last Saturday when we had gorgeous wheather the DH and I decided to go for some pumpkins along the river 'Linge'. I think this typical dutch landscape is breathtaking. A few years ago the minister of traffic and water decided it was time that those dutch rivers wouldn't meander anymore, but should be made straight, as that way maintenance would be so much cheaper. Some people would sell their mother if they could save a penny that way. Luckily we don't hear of those plans anymore and that minister is now mayor in Almere or Haarlemmermeer where she cannot do any dammage to the landscape.

Walnuts were sold everywhere. Finally we found some gourds, not real pumpkins but nice. And the best part is that they're cheap. You can choose whatever gourd or apple you like, put your money in a little tin and drive off again. It still is 2008 here.

We went back along the river Lek this time.

Barbara at Oodles & Oodles suggested that I teach you a dutch word every blog post. Great idea, thanks Barbara. Today the word is
rivier, which means river, it is related as you can see. (yeah we start really easy here!)

Uiteindelijk vonden we kalebassen.
O ja en elke keer leer ik jullie een engels woord;

Remember every comment counts for the give away at LiLi's October give away month!

Thanks for visiting, xoxo LiLi M.

Sweet and Sinister Swap

Yoohoo! almost 50 euro's for the dutch cancer foundation, thank you all for commenting my last post. I'll just give 50 euro's. It sure is better in the account of the KWF than it is in my Fortis account! Winners of the lucky bracelets at the end of this post!

Last week the Sweet and Sinister swaps arrived. Look at this! This is sooo cool! Wanda managed to put this all in one box. Oh my, it really is too much! Are you seated? You just won't believe this! Wanda has lived in Germany and she knows it isn't easy to buy Halloween stuff over here, but now I don't need anything anymore LOL;
Let's take a closer look: (I have to tell you that it took me more than one hour to take pictures of the stuff that Wanda sent me.)

Halloween village, almost Halloween metropolis lol!
I'm going to paint these black with the help of my kids, just as Wanda intended.

This little canvas was made by Wanda. Cute isn't it?
Deze maakte Wanda zelf. Heel erg leuk, vind ik.

Ribbons, banner, spiders, cupcakes, glittery alfabet and cakeboxes all for crafting.
Knutselspullen.

Vintage goodie bag!
Wanda has used a lot of these halloween web bags, I love them!

This bag was filled with buttons, vintage Halloween pins and a lot of vintage ribbons.
Inhoud van de vintage goodie bag.

Halloween candy! In the picture those bags look small, but in reality they are big and heavy! My kids love Wanda and hate me, because they had to wait to touch the candy until the bags have been photographed.
Snoep!

Home decorating department!
Look at the gorgeous L and M made of pearls!
Het houdt maar niet op! Hier de spulletjes om te versieren.

Note cards!! These are no singles but packages!
En ook nog eens 5 pakjes kaarten.

Fabrics!
Stof!

The loot! I was so surprised, I just don't know what to say but a huge thanks to Wanda! Unbelievable!

And I'll show you some things I have sent Wanda.

I made this Halloween banner of witch clothes and accessoirees.
Deze heksen slinger maakte ik voor haar.

Something sweet...

Something sinister?
Iets engs?

Well, after Halloween this box can double as a box to put your pens and pencils in. I made two feather pens as well, but I forgot to take a picture :-(

I took photo's from Wanda's blog...and cut and paste them into Wandicia and Clarkez.

As we actually never have celebrated Halloween over here it was impossible to find some vintage Halloween stuff, so I bought this antique lithographed tin in fall colors and some antique cupcake plates. (forgot to take a photo of those too).

I filled this box with a few scary sweets, original Dutch syrop wafres that are really addictive and a little present for Wanda's sons.

And I made Wanda this raven box.

Now for the winners of the little bracelets that I bought to support the dutch cancer foundation.
I let my husband yell 3 numbers and counted everyone only once. He yelled:

12. Marianne
23. Toni
36. Heidi (from Picasa!)

Congrats girls.
Next time another giveaway, but I count all October comments!

Thanks for visiting me, have a great weekend!

hugs LiLi M.

Support the breast cancer foundation!

Sorry, I kept you waiting. This was just one of those weeks. There wasn't a day without a visit to the dentist, the 'eye'doctor, the one who puts braces in our childrens' mouths and so on. On top of that I had my first cystitis (of course a word from the dictionary; an inflamation of the bladder). But I'm ok now! (thanks Stacey for your inquiry)

There was the Sweet and Sinister swap to be finished:

This package is on it's way to Wanda.

You want to peek inside?

That's it folks! It has to be a surprise to Wanda!

It was raining cats and dogs here all week. We think that is fall...

Okay I have promised you a giveaway. I was in doubt all week. What would I give away that would appeal to everybody? Well let me think a while and I'm giving away a special appetizer now. A kind of a teaser. But one of major importance:
As October is breast cancer awareness month, I have bought three little lucky bracelets to support the dutch cancer foundation, that mainly supports research to cancer.

Thanks to research breast cancer doens't always mean 'the end' but we can still do better. Here in the Netherlands this year there is special attention for the emotional problems that occur when having or surviving breast cancer. Please support Pink Ribbon in your country. And don't forget: it's important to do your self search every month. Early discovery increases the chances of curing this disease.

Just give a comment on this post and maybe you win this lucky bracelet to support the dutch cancer foundation. For every comment I will donate one euro to the KWF, the dutch cancer foundation, so don't be shy, though I will count every person once. I will draw a winner October 9th 10.00 h pm CET.
I'll come back as soon as possible with another give away. October at LiLi's is going to be a give away month!
Before I forget: please visit the button floozies' give away too, the more visitors, the more money is going to the american breast cancer foundation.
