Chasing pumpkins

Denkend aan Holland
Zie ik breede rivieren
traag door oneindig
laagland gaan...

Thinking of Holland
I picture broad rivers
meandering through
unending lowland.....

english translation by Michael Longley

Last Saturday when we had gorgeous wheather the DH and I decided to go for some pumpkins along the river 'Linge'. I think this typical dutch landscape is breathtaking. A few years ago the minister of traffic and water decided it was time that those dutch rivers wouldn't meander anymore, but should be made straight, as that way maintenance would be so much cheaper. Some people would sell their mother if they could save a penny that way. Luckily we don't hear of those plans anymore and that minister is now mayor in Almere or Haarlemmermeer where she cannot do any dammage to the landscape.

Walnuts were sold everywhere. Finally we found some gourds, not real pumpkins but nice. And the best part is that they're cheap. You can choose whatever gourd or apple you like, put your money in a little tin and drive off again. It still is 2008 here.

We went back along the river Lek this time.

Barbara at Oodles & Oodles suggested that I teach you a dutch word every blog post. Great idea, thanks Barbara. Today the word is
rivier, which means river, it is related as you can see. (yeah we start really easy here!)

Uiteindelijk vonden we kalebassen.
O ja en elke keer leer ik jullie een engels woord;

Remember every comment counts for the give away at LiLi's October give away month!

Thanks for visiting, xoxo LiLi M.

Good to hear that the minister is well buried in Almere...or there about. She must have been totally nuts! I haven`t been on my yearly pumkin hunt yet. Usually I am to late and have to make do with either an enormous one that costs a bomb or a misshaped tiny one.... Lets see what happens this year...not too late yet! Or is it ??? Time seems to run so fast. Beautiful pics of the canals. I have never visited the Netherlands but would very much like to. Now even more so since I soon will be able to speak dutch thanks to you :-)

Lots of love to you my friend!

Nogmaals bedankt!
Groetjes, M

What a beautiful meandering "rivier". That's insane to make them straight! Glad she's not in charge any more. Looks like you had a nice day trip. As far as "The Dawn Fairies". I've not seen them either. One can dream, though, eh?
LOL! LOL!

Have a wonderful day,
Kitty

I still believe that if you mix english with a bit german and skandinavian and i tint of french then you have dutch, very easy, but then I think today i read the dutch words, I don't understand but only a few words. Your aunt is incredible. My veg-garden is a quarter of hers. The only time I dig is when the potatoes is uptaken. Instead of digging i use a fork (big one) tuck it down in the soil and just bend a bit, then you got the air down in the soil and it is easy to pull the weed up. I always try to cover the soil. With grass clip or rests of vegetables, it looks untidy but the soil likes it.
Stunning views of the river! That minister didn't got many qlues. Have a wonderful week! Many hugs /linnea-maria

hoi hoi,

I'm glad you started with an easy word, but I'll still forget it in a few minutes. I think I have breathed in too much glitter and it has killed my memory brain cells.
