Sea glass

When I tell you that I visited Hoek van Holland it is usually to tell you that I went to the car boot sale over there and to show you something like this:

I bought these and some other stuff the last time I was there, the lovely baby shoes are one of the best finds of the season and the Tiny books on the back ground too. But the car boot sale isn't the only thing that attracts me to Hoek van Holland:

As the name Hoek = the hook, meaning the sharp angle of Holland, implies there is sea and hence a beach up there. The coast line of the Netherlands and of two of the coast provinces also known as Holland, is a dune landscape. All beaches are sand beaches.

As the dune landscape is very vulnerable, a lot of the the beaches and dunes are artificially maintained, to keep our feet dry, as this part of the Netherlands lies below sea level, strange isn't it? So we really need the dunes.

Maar ik keek vooral naar beneden...
But I wasn't looking at the dunes, I was looking down all the time, seeing this^.

Sometimes I kept my breath, did I finally....?
I was looking for sea glass. I had seen it in so many blogs, but never searched for it over here, neither could I remember ever seeing it here. When I found glass, every time it was the same: it was just a piece of broken glass, not the real worn sea glass I was looking for. I don't know why I couldn't find it. Are the shores here kept so clean that there is a minimum of glass? Is the North Sea too small to provide for sea glass?

Mijn reactie :-(

At the end of our 15 kilometer walk hubby said: There you have your sea glass: XD: pointing at the 'glasbak' on the beach! (glasbak= the container where you put your glass apart from the other garbage in order to have it recycled, I don't know the English word)
Funny guy huh? :-(

Now you can imagine that I was thrilled when I discovered that I won Alison Gibbs' birthday give away. Yes you're right: not only two Cath Kidston soaps and bath melts, but you are looking at a baggy filled with SEA GLASS!!

Inside the lovely parcel was this gorgeous heart, that the Alison made herself, I believe similar ones are for sale in her shop. This heart is in my studio now, but it was too dark to take photos today.

Ja, Alison heeft me behoorlijk verwend!
See how Alison spoiled me!

Despite the bad weather I couldn't resist taking a photo of the sea glass!
Thanks a million Alison, you have fulfilled one of my wishes, I love everything you sent me!

Thanks for visiting me, you are always welcome here. If you have any questions, please make sure that there is a blog url or an email address in your comment, otherwise it is impossible for me to respond. I had somebody from Russia asking a question, but I cannot find it anymore, sorry, I think I agree :-}! xoxo LiLi M.

hi LiLi,

it's always so nice to be spoiled by our sweet blogging friends.

i am able to find sea glass at this dumpy beach near a playground. it's unfit for swimming but always full of sea glass. i haven't been in a long time. if you know of any messy beaches where you would not want to swim, they might just have all the sea glass you want! LOL

Oh good morning my dear Lili! What a beautiful post. Your colors are always so soft and peaceful! OH! I love sea glass! I have a hugh collection of it, Lili! Do you want some? I could send it to you! When I lived in the state of Massachusetts, my husband and I lived on the beach! Every day after a stressful day at work, we would go out and hunt for sea glass. I love all the colors, but the beautiful light blue is my favorite! What is your favorite color? Oh how I have a desire to go to the Netherlands. Take care my dear friend! Anita

I've wondered what happened to sea glass, too? 15 years ago when I first went to California beaches it wasn't hard to find, but now it seems impossible. Could it be that we really have less litter to become sea glass?

Anyway, glad you got some sea glass from Alison.

I don't see sea glass here either and we are right on the beach but when I was in Barbados last time I saw lots of it. My son and I collected a bunch but I don't know what happened to it. Next month I want to go to Jamaica so I will look around for some when I go. I love what you did with the jewelry box and the little house. In fact I like a lot of your little projects. So very sweet and creative.

I have only been to Hoek van holland once and that was many years ago, only getting of the ferry from Dover and immediately boarding the train for Germany. Oh I was SO sea sick! Yuck! Obviously I missed a really scenic spot! It rather reminds me of the coast not far from my country house minus the sea shells.

Hope you have a lovely weekend

Oh my - our beaches ARE very different! Our town doesn't allow anyone on the beach grass, as it is the only thing which is preventing erosion. Chatham on Cape Cod lost several beach houses this year due to erosion. As for sea glass, I RARELY find it any longer. When I was a child it was very easy to find. HAHA - maybe it's our age preventing us from finding any! lol

Hi, I was just blog hopping and came across yours. I love that you are in Holland, finally someone on my own side of the ocean! I live in Germany although I am originally from the US, and so i consider myself lucky to have a bit from both worlds. Your blog is just lovely, I very much enjoyed your story about the sea glass. Makes me want to drive on over to the North Sea beach and look for some myself! warmly, Debby (do you have a follow button, I can not find it!! :-) )

Hi Lili~ Thanks for coming over for a visit to my blog. We were in Paris because my daughter, Ashley was attending the Paris Fashion Institute. We met up with her after her school was over. We stayed in Paris about a week, then when on to Italy and then to Amsterdam. We had visited Amsterdam the last time we were in Europe and loved it so much we had to go back. Your country is beautiful. I think Constance thinks we are still there but unfortunately we have been home for about 3 weeks. I will visit your blog again soon.

LiLi, love the treasures, how special is that to receive such delightful gifts. I love sea glass, I don't think it's something we would find here, too bad.
How was your bear making class? I am sure you had a great time, and with Rosabear as a teacher, who wouldn't? I can't wait to see your bears, your daughter's too!!!! I just love taking classes, you always meet such interesting folks.
I found two of the old china dolls, one is really old and the other is a replica. That's the one I made into the angel in my banner. Not sure what I am doing with the second, I love how you displayed just the head in the glass box.
Your new banner looks so good!!! I love it!

Bofkont!

I live nowhere near the beach and I bring home loads of shells every time we visit the shore. Thank you for sharing your beautiful beach!

Hi Lili,

Hope you and your family are doing well. Oh, I love love love sea glass. It is hard to find here, the real thing. They have sea glass in the art and craft stores, but it is just tumbled glass to take the edges off. But, to find a real piece of sea glass, just as difficult as it is there.

Blessings
Kitty
