The expiration date of the Frohne Schnittzeichner

Some people have a tough time in the beginning of the year, in the middle of winter, but I always start the year decluttering. Never a dull moment at LiLi's. I know that I am not the only one of course, this lady is letting things go too and she introduced me to the expiration date on stuff. Now I wonder about this:

Ik verveel me nou werkelijk nooit. Papieren zakjes, stukjes touw, allerlei tijdschriften...
When my father died I found this tattered box 'Frohne Schnittzeichner in a closet. I'm quite sure that it was my grandmothers' once. 'Your mother had EVERYTHING', my mother use to say to my father. And let me tell you that this wasn't meant as something to be proud of. My grandmother used to save everything, like paper bags and ropes and magazines. She was a crafter too.

This is inside the box: an instrument, that reminds me of the Sketch-o-graph (do you remember that one?) and some booklets. In fact it is a pantograph (which is actually the original name of the Sketch-0-graph), an instrument to copy and enlarge a drawing, invented in the 17th century, according to Wikipedia.

One booklet is filled with clothing, all numbered. The numbers refer to patterns in another booklet. Here is number 4120, the red skirt and the blouse, which pattern is on the bottom of the left page. There are separate pages of pattern numbers combined with how much fabric is required.
With these booklets and the pantograph my grandmother could sew almost anything in the fifties. But I am quite sure that she never used this.

This is one of those things that seems to be very handy, but in fact it doesn't work at all. I couldn't use the Sketch-o-graph, neither can I use this!
I always saw my grandmother knitting, or making things out of wood or out of wire, but I never saw her using this. Last year I thought, why save it like this? Why don't I use the booklets for crafting?

No one ever does anything with this since 50 years...
I do like the drawings. Btw. Do you see that the ladies underwear isn't drawn on a lady?
These were the fifties!

Last summer I found these two on a market. Two Frohne pattern magazines from the early 60-ties.

Do you notice the different look?
Pants! Even the models look more self conscious.

Now I have an instrument that I will never use and 3 pattern magazines that I won't cut for crafting. Okay, I know that I can make copies and use those. Why cannot I just use it, or sell it?
My grandmother died in 1970, I think a little more than 20 years after she bought this. My father saved it for about 30 years and now I have it for about 7 years. When does the Frohne Schnittzeichner expire?

To end useful; here are some drawings that might come handy this weekend. I could mail you the mini pattern, if you want so. Have fun whether you are celebrating Carnival, Mardi Gras or just having weekend, thanks for your visit and your advice,

xoxo LiLi M.

My advice isn't very helpful- my advice is "keep it"- well, I guess I would throw away the pantogram, or maybe give it to the thrift store- but I wouldn't throw away those pattern books- the drawings are just wonderful. I would think they would have some value to a collector, but if not, I'd be cutting them up for collage.

i think the pantograph looks kind of cool...can't you work it into some kind of vignette in your studio space? i would definitely keep the books...they look like they are pristine...and they are very charming...if you get rid of them, you will need them immediately afterward...trust me on this...it happens to me all the time...

she saved everything, too,

before christmas
i brought home patterns
my mom used for my prom dress
and a few other formal dresses.

'''i can cut these up and use them,'''
i thought.

yikees!

i cannot cut them ♥♥♥

Now I'm feeling a little guilty for making you feel as if you need to get rid of it! I really like the pattern illustrations ... I think they do not expire.

Ma chère Lili!

You have taken me back in time, a time when my dearest momma would buy patterns and make everything from slips, coats, dresses, blouses and pants for myself, my father AND my Barbie dolls!! I am so impressed with the beautiful treasures that you show us from your heritage, Lili....you have a wealth of beautiful artifacts that tell us so much about your life. I so love everything you share with us!!! Happy decluttering, but most of all dear friend, have a marvelous Valentine's Day with all the people that you love! Know that someone out here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. loves you too! Bisous, Anita

Hoi hoi,

atelierlemlem said...

Lili,

I love the old images, they are great. Maybe you can use them in altered projects. For the pantogram, could you use it to hang tags or pretty objects from (mount it to something?)? So neat to have things from your Grandmother.

Janine said...

Good Morning Lili!!!

Oh these are so pretty...what a keepsake (and I mean that in a good way)!!!

I could never part with this for two reasons...one is that it's old and two, it's sentimental as it belongs to your grandmother.

The words "expiration date" are not in MY vocabulary!!!
haha

Happy Valentine's Weekend Lili!!!

I think that is a wonderful book!! I do vaguely remember those pantographs but not for dress making.
My grandmother could look at a photograph and make a dress without a pattern. Me, I need a pattern!! I buy those kinds of patterns to cut up and collage and then I just end up looking at them! What a chicken! Have a wonderful weekend Lili!

Betzie said...

I'm a terrible one to ask..I can't throw anything away and yet I hate to cut things up that are old or sentimental!

Girl you should scan the ladies and then make them into paper dolls -which can then be turned into tags or greeting cards! I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

It is so difficult to "part with things", isn't it? Especially when it is related to family items. Such cute patterns. I always said I was born in the wrong generation, should have been back in the 50's... :) :) :)

Have a good week,

Hello Sweet Lili,
Yes its me...Still don't have a new post ,but I thought I would come visit. Just in time too!!!
Don't you dare throw that thing whatever it is away. You would regret it as soon as you do.Been there done that.So I know what I'm talking about.I threw away some of my mama's things and I'm still to this day upset about it.Your grandma's things ...to me would be even worst.
Also i think that really is a cool gadet and wonderful patterns. My Mother made everything I wore and also my brothers. As you said you can copy the patterns to use in crafts..
Now I want to thank you for coming by, with your well wishes.I am doing better.I'm trying to get something up to post.I will have to skip Mardi Gras this year...BOOHOO.But thats the way of it.No beads for me ot throw me something Mister...LOL.Its to cold this year anyway.
You take care Hon, I do miss you.

Wow. I've been looking for a Frohne Modelle pantograph. I have one of the pattern books, but no pantograph. I sew, and I'm pretty sure I could figure out how to use it to make full size sewing patterns from the book. If you haven't cut the books up yet, I hope you don't! Those have historical value, as does the pantograph that goes with them. Maybe there's some kind of archive near you that would appreciate having them donated.

LiLi M. said...

To Nalo, sorry I cannot answer you because you have a 'no reply' in your name. This post was written with a little irony. The 'problem' is that I cannot cut those books, because they are original.I do appreciate them, otherwise I wouldn't have bought two books this summer. About the pantograph...it is just irony, I keep it, just because it belonged to my grandmother. That is why we are keeping it for such a long time already, don't we ever get tired of that? Is there an expiration date on those items, that is what I wanted to say! ;-).

Hi lilli,

bonne nuit! desiree

Hello Lily,
I have read your webblog about the frohne pantograph .Is it possible to giving away the patterns on your webblog or do you want to get paid for it?
With kind regards, Anna van Dijk

LiLi M. said...

Anna van Dijk, I cannot get in touch with you when you give a comment as an unknown person. I can trace you on google, but I cannot respond over there either. I gave this away a few years ago!
