I had the time of my life!

Hallo allemaal,

Eindelijk ben ik terug!

De eerste weken van onze vakantie brachten we door in het Zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten:

Finally I'm back. I had a wonderful vacation. First we spent four weeks in the South West of the United States:

We started in Los Angeles, where we stayed at a former ocean steamer; the Queen Mary.

De winkelgallerij, ik vond de art decovormen, - kleuren en -materialen helemaal geweldig!

Our room, or should I say our cabin, was totally authentic too. Unfortunately the management thought two of us might as well stay on the couch, we were having a jet lag anyway. So before you make your reservations for the Queen Mary remember: art deco interior yes, service no.

De kamers waren nog helemaal authentiek. Errug leuk, maar het was iets minder dat men dacht dat wij wel met z'n 4-en in een 2 persoonshut konden. Met zo'n jetlag kon je toch wel overal slapen? Maar toch...voordat je ook de Queen Mary boekt: denk eraan decoratie: helemaal goed, service een stuk minder!

The first day in LA we went to Hollywood. This photo represents Hollywood to me. It once was something, but that must have been a long time ago.

Ons eerste bezoek in LA was aan Hollywood, mmm wel wat vergane glorie.

But before you skip the walk of fame in your next visit: I have to say that I loved the Betty Page shop. After visiting Hollywood we went to the Grove, a mall, and a farmers' market.

Maar toch waren er wel wat leuke winkels, zoals Betty Page hierboven. Vanaf Hollywood reden we naar de Grove, een mall en farmers' market, vooral dat laatste vond ik erg leuk. In de mall vond ik Anthropology, een winkel die ik ook al in New York bezocht helemaal te gek!

From LA we went to San Diego. We had a new toy with us, the flip camera and I just didn't take enough photos of San Diego. Mmm, a reason to go back some day, I would love to. I think San Diego rocks!

Van LA gingen we richting zuiden naar San Diego. Deze vakantie hadden we voor het eerst een nieuw speeltje bij ons: de flip camera. Ik heb dus veel minder foto's gemaakt dan ik van plan was en de filmpjes zijn niet echt voor de blog gemaakt. Ik vind San Diego één van de meest onderschatte steden van de US. Het heeft echt van alles, een 'oude' mexicaanse stad, een grote 19de eeuwse wijk, een prachtig stadspark, schitterend strand en nog veel meer:

San Diego has it all, a Spanish historic quarter, a gaslight district, a wonderful peninsula Coronado Island, a fantastic huge park and a post modern mall, 'Westfield Horton Plaza', the only place were I took some photos and almost got arrested for that instead of taking photos of my party! What on earth do those security guys think????

Zoals bovenstaand postmodern winkelcentrum 'Westfield Horton Plaza', waar de beveiliging vond dat ik beter foto's kon maken van mijn familie ipv de gebouwen...af en toe draven die Amerikanen echt door!

And of course we visited Sea World.

En natuurlijk is Sea World hier.

Next stop was Palm Springs where we survived an earth quake! Quite an experience.

I wanted to visit Ruddy's General Store Museum:

Van San Diego ging het landinwaarts naar Palm Springs, waar we voor het eerst van ons leven een aardbeving meemaakten. Mmm daar is dit gebied toch ook beroemd om? Een hele ervaring, gelukkig zonder ongelukken.

Of course, it was closed; the story of my life!

On the other hand: who can blame them, it sure was too hot in July!

Ik wilde graag Ruddy's kruidenier museum bezoeken met allemaal mooie oude verpakkingen, maar helaas...zo tref ik het vaker op vakantie...gesloten!

We travelled along, here our hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.

We reisden door naar Phoenix, Arizona, hier^ ons hotel helemaal in Spaanse stijl.

We drove the Apache trail over there. It was awesome. It felt like there could be either cowboys or indians behind every rock.

Ik vond de omgeving van Phoenix echt schitterend. Zo'n cowboy landschap en dan die enorme cacteeën (cactussen).

Arizona is just the best of the Wild West: here Goldfield, a ghost town.

Hier een zogenaamde ghost town. Tegenwoordig weer zeer in trek.

When in Arizona, the Grand Canyon is a must see.

Natuurlijk moet je de Grand Canyon bezoeken als je in Arizona bent.

You can take about a million photos up there!

Je zou hier een miljoen foto's kunnen nemen en nog het gevoel hebben dat het onwaarschijnlijk mooie landschap niet 'over' komt.

One of the things that struck me most was the smell of the pines, too bad I cannot incorporate that into my blog!

Ik was ook heel erg onder de indruk van de geuren hier: echte dennengeur, heerlijk. Dan hebben de badschuimfabrikanten toch nog heeeel veel huiswerk te doen.

Driving to Las Vegas we passed the Hoover Dam.

Terwijl we naar Las Vegas reden passeerden we de Hoover Dam.

Las Vegas. What can I say? You could even take a gondola in the Venetian part over here.

Las Vegas, wat moet ik ervan zeggen? Yep hier in het Venetiaanse gedeelte kon je zelfs een gondelvaart nemen, die Amerikanen vinden het niet snel te gek.

Ahhh all those gamblers, while anybody could see outside where that pot of gold was hidden!

Jaja, wij hoefden niet zo nodig te gokken, omdat we zo wel zagen waar de pot met goud stond (zie je het ook? anders even de foto aanklikken!)

Las Vegas is not my cup of tea, though I loved to shop there:

Here is another Betty Page shop and we did some outlets too.

Las Vegas is niet helemaal mijn ding, maar je kon hier heerlijk eten (!) en winkelen. Hier weer een andere Betty Page winkel en we hebben hier ook wat outlets bezocht.

From the crazy and busy Las Vegas we drove into the desert of Death Valley.

Man it was hot! About 116 F, but so worth while. I love the colors of heat. The whites in the back ground are salt plateaus, once salt lakes.

Een enorm contrast van de gekte van Las Vegas reden we de (echte) woestijn van Death Valley in. Zuuut was was het heet: 47•, maar tsjonge wat schitterend. In die hitte zie je de meest mooie kleuren. Het wit in de achtergrond zijn de verdroogde zoute meren.

Here we are at the lake that dried about 2000 years ago, the salt remained.

Hier zie je zo'n zoutvlakte, waar zo'n 2000 jaar geleden nog een meer was.

Every few hours drive the landscape totally changed. These canyons can be seen north from Death Valley. I thought the Grand Canyon would be a canyon like this, but that is totally different, far more trees around the canyons at the Grand Canyon.

Elke paar uur rijden veranderde het landschap totaal. Hier één van de kloven ten Noorden van Death Valley. Ik had gedacht dat de Grand Canyon ook zo'n soort kloof was, maar die wordt aan de noordkant omringd door bossen en je ziet die kloof pas als je er al bent.

And even further North an Alp like (for us Europeans...) landscape, we are entering Yosemite Park.

Nog meer Noordwaarts is er een Alpenachtig landschap; hier komen we Yosemite Park binnen.

From the desert into the green world with modest temperatures again.

Vanuit de woestijn komen we een groene wereld binnen met veel aangenamere temperaturen.

Ah those sequoia's are really huge!

Wij bezochten ook de enorme sequoia's.

Back to the city again: San Francisco's famous Golden Gate bridge and just as famous fog. It was cold in the early mornings and after sun set. But we had a marvelous time:

Na natuur was het weer tijd voor de stad: San Francisco, hier de beroemde Golden Gate brug en de nog beroemdere mist! Het was 's ochtends en 's avonds gewoon een beetje koud door die mist, maar we hebben ons optimaal geamuseerd!

All those funny performers in the streets.

Overal lachende mensen, ook onder invloed van talloze grappige straatoptredens.

I took this photo from the famous historic tram. Can it be more Californian? A surfer in one of the streets of San Francisco. Love the atmosphere here and that in China town and Alcatraz and little Italy and the lovely parcs...just everything.

Deze foto nam ik vanuit de historische tram. Kan het nog Californischer (mmm dit klinkt toch wel raar in het Nederlands!). Een surfer in de straten van San Francisco. Ik vond de sfeer hier geweldig, Chinatown veeeel beter dan dat in New York, Alcatraz zeer de moeite waard en zo kan ik nog ff doorgaan.

Not to mention the Victorian architecture.

En niet te vergeten de architectuur.

From San Francisco we started our journey back south again, along the coast line. Here our first stop in Monterey. If you click on the photo you can see an awful lot of seals. I could watch them for hours, but boy they smell.

Vanaf San Francisco begonnen wij aan onze terugreis, richting zuiden langs de kust. Hier Monterey. Als je op de foto klikt zie je dat hier enorme hoeveelheden zeehonden verblijven, ik kon er uren naar kijken, maar die hondjes stinken wel zeg.

And my first stop ever at an antique mall. Hubby isn't a big fan of antiquing, to say the least. We have everything we need he always says, but he just don't understand that one simply cannot have enough buttons on cards, lace and a few other things... I'll show you my finds later.

Hier bezocht ik mijn eerste antiek mall. Echt een geweldig concept. Jammer dat ik de enige hier in huis ben die zoiets waardeert.

Loved the beach in Santa Barbara.

Geweldig strand daar in Santa Barbara!

I loved Santa Barbara, not only for its beautiful beach, but also for the lovely small vintage boutiques, like this one, which specialized in vintage clothing.

Santa Barbara vond ik echt heel erg de moeite waard, niet alleen vanwege het prachtige strand, maar ook vanwege de vele leuke kleine (vintage) winkeltjes.

Or this authentic hairdresser.

Our last stop before returning to LA and taking the plane back home was Disneyland California. We had a swell time over there.

Onze laatste stop voordat we terug naar Nederland vlogen was Disneyland California. Toch weer heel anders dan Parijs of Disneyworld. Ik laat me daar altijd graag inspireren door de vele decoraties.

I always get so inspired by Disney's shop windows...

Omdat ik zo lang ben weggebleven had ik geen zin om deze post nog te verdelen over meerdere dagen. Toen ik terug kwam kon ik niet op het internet en omdat ik het zo druk had met andere dingen heeft het 'even' geduurd voordat ik weer terug in Blogland was. Ondertussen ben ik mijn Reader kwijtgeraakt, dus ik zal jullie lukraak bezoeken:

Maar ik ben terug! Bedankt voor jullie leuke mailtjes, het zal even duren maar ik beantwoord ze zsm! Morgen begint hier de gekte van alledag weer!

After my return home I had a severe jet lag and worse: no internet access. I lost my Google Reader, so I will visit you randomly, but I'm definitely back again!

To dye for!

Every once in a while my special friend Mrs. H. comes along and she always brings a lot of fun stuff, she has found at several flea markets, especially for me. It always feels like Christmas and my birthday are on the same day. Thank you ever so much Mrs. H! I think I could fill a lot of blogposts with her awesome gifts. And why not start that today? Look what was in her purse last time:

Zo nu en dan komt mijn vriendin Mrs. H. langs met een tas vol rommelmarkt vondsten, speciaal voor mij. Dat voelt altijd alsof Sinterklaas op mijn verjaardag ook nog eens op visite komt. Heerlijk, nogmaals bedankt voor al die leuke cadeautjes Mrs. H! Ik zou langzamerhand heel wat blogposten kunnen vullen met haar geschenken en waarom zou ik dat niet eens doen? Kijk maar eens wat ze de laatste keer bij zich had:

Buttons on card, I just love the tattered colors and a few packages of fabric dye.

Een knopenkaart, prachtig die verweerde kleuren en een paar pakjes textielverf.

The dye is apricot, but you might have figured that out yourself.

Geweldig toch die opdruk? (klik op de foto voor een vergroting!).

De kleur is abrikoos, maar dat had je zelf wellicht al uitgevogeld.

This one is 'water green' ah can you imagine?

Dit is watergroen, dat lijkt me prachtig!

You could have guessed that this is red dye.

En dat dit rood is komt vast niet als een verrassing.

I already had these small dutch boxes of dye in my toy shops. I bought a lot of them when I was about 14. I bought them in a second hand shop back in about 1975 for a quarter a piece. You can see which color I never used, I loved to dye my clothes then, but my mom wasn't that excited that I used her washing machine!

Deze verfdoosjes van 't Lintje heb ik al sinds de jaren '70 . Ik kocht ze in een 2de hands zaakje in de Hobbemastraat in Den Haag voor een kwartje per stuk. Ik vond de doosjes (jaren 40-50?) toen al mooi, maar ik gebruikte de verf ook om mijn kleding op te pimpen. Deze kleuren gebruikte ik nooit en ze staan nu in één van mijn speelgoedwinkeltjes.

You might think that in this 21st century with numerous possibilities the fabric dye manufacturer would come up with something way better than THIS^, I took this photo in the drugstore. Mmm you just don't understand why packaging just have to be more and more ugly all the time.

Je zou verwachten dat tegenwoordig met al die mogelijkheden de stoffenverf fabrikant zijn/haar waren op crea wijze aan de man/vrouw zou willen brengen, maar niets is minder waar! Waarom kan er tegenwoordig nou zo weinig aantrekkelijk verpakt worden? De foto nam ik onder verbaasde blikken in 't Kruidvat.

Ok nowadays there is still much beauty to enjoy. Remember these^ cute actors? They are acting again in the newest Toy Story (3) movie. We saw it last week in imax and 3d and it was wonderful. I enjoyed each and every moment of it and even could use my hanky in the end. It is always a bit embarrassing when grown people start to cry over an animation motion picture, don't you think? But these funny guys did it again.

Toch zijn er wel degelijk dingen die steeds mooier en beter worden. Ik had het genoegen om afgelopen week naar de weergaloze acteerprestaties van bovenstaand koppel te kijken in de film Toy Story 3 in 3d en imax. GE-WEL-DIG van het begin tot het eind. Hoewel er niet veel echte 3d momenten waren, is de computer animatie weer zoveel beter geworden. Het verbaast me altijd dat zo'n film mij ook nog eens weet te ontroeren, maar ik had gelukkig die enorme 3d bril op!

Endless summer!

Thanks very much girls, also on behalf of our daughter Eva, for the many wishes we received on her graduation, we enjoyed them all! Now an endless summer is starting:

Bedankt voor de vele aardige wensen en felicitaties voor onze Eva omdat zij haar diploma behaalde. Nu gaat er een eindeloze zomer beginnen, als het aan onze hortensia 'Endless summer' ligt. Hij bloeit maar door, mmm wat een geluk dat je zomaar een endless summer kan kopen tegenwoordig!

Here is our hydrangea "Endless summer" that we bought last year. It will blossom all summer! Who would know that one can buy an endless summer nowadays? Just great!

Voor mij is het gewoon weer een groene dag: ik heb de oude speelgoedmand omgetoverd tot bagagefietsmand, zo daar kan lekker wat in, geen auto nodig in de drukke binnenstad. Heerlijk!

My basket is huge! I love it! Especially for my dutch readers: did you already pimp up your bike? There are so many fun ways to do that!

En hebben jullie je fiets al opgepimpt? Je hebt zulke leuke dingen ervoor tegenwoordig.

This guy, the delphinium, had it's first year here too, I love that he came back flowering, I love that color.

Ik was even bang dat zeker persoon deze ridderspoor en zijn broers weg geschoffeld had. Mmm die broers die wonen inmiddels ongetwijfeld in het groene paradijs, maar deze ridder bloeit!

Maybe you remember we had this water feature, but we bought another one this year:

Wij hadden natuurlijk al een vijver in de tuin, maar echt stromend water is toch nog handiger!

It is so much easier to water the plants from here!

The smell of the lonicera is divine, especially after sunset.

De kamperfoelie bloeit alsof hij per bloem betaald wordt, mmmm vooral 's avonds is er weinig dat tegen deze geur op kan.

En natuurlijk: geen tuin post in juni zonder rozen:

This pink one (sorry I am not good in remembering names!) smells just like a french parfumerie!

Deze roze roos ruikt zo ongelooflijk rozig, je krijgt direct zin om je eigen parfum samen te stellen. Mmm ik moet niet vergeten wat blaadjes te verzamelen voor in bad of voor in een sachet, maar dan heb ik wellicht een wat grotere struik nodig.

I have to remember to keep the petals to use in bath or in sachets.

Some flowers you can pick from again and again.

Hier wat bloemen waar je van kunt blijven plukken.

Later this year there will be fruits to enjoy, like apples, plumes and these figs.

I enjoy this summer weather in our garden. I kinda collapsed after the huge graduation party, but now that I'm back on my feet I am not only going to wander through our garden but through blogland as well. Chat to you soon,

'Jumble'dam and sewing notions- Rommeldam en naaibenodigdheden

The jumble sale and flea market season is at its peak! Today was a beautiful day and I went to 'Rommeldam' which is a very large jumble sale, an annual event. I'm going to flea markets since I was born as my parents were avid collectors. Especially with these jumble sales I can still hear my mother: those are the best! But I simply haven't got a good strategy. I was in time (before it started of course) but when it opened I was totally overwhelmed.
Het rommelmarkt seizoen is op zijn hoogtepunt! Vandaag was het schitterend weer en ging ik naar Rommeldam, de jaarlijkse rommelmarkt georganiseerd door de hervormde kerk. Nu ga ik sinds mensenheugenis naar allerlei rommelmarkten, maar als ik naar zo eentje ten bate van een kerk ga, dan hoor ik mijn moeder zeggen: ten bate van....dat zijn de beste! Maar ik heb eigenlijk nooit zo'n goede strategie. Ik was op tijd, maar toen de markt open ging wist ik gewoon niet waar te beginnen!

Everybody just knows where to go, except for me. I kind of like everything, but that doesn't work here. The market is huge and everything is sorted, so there are booths with books, others with vases, earthenware, and there is a large furniture department:
Dat heb ik vaker: iedereen rent (ja letterlijk!) op zijn doel af en ik vind natuurlijk veel te veel leuk! Alles is gesorteerd, boeken bij boeken, glas bij glas en ga zo maar door. En dan is er ook nog een enorme afdeling meubels:

It wasn't until I saw a man with the most beautiful very old Christmas ornaments that I came to my senses. Okay, I missed those. Now what to do? When I cannot find anything on a market like the flea market in Rotterdam, which has its (sometimes quite expensive) treasures, but you have to be lucky, I always buy a few wooden spools. As I just hate to go home empty handed. So up I went to the booth with craft materials.
Pas toen ik een man zag met de meest geweldige oude kerstversiering kwam ik een beetje tot mezelf. Hoe nu verder? Wanneer ik helemaal niets kan vinden op de vlooienmarkt in Rotterdam, dan koop ik een paar houten klosjes met garen. Dus fluks naar de kraam met handwerkbenodigdheden. Daar had ik gelijk succes!

There I found those ribbons, the small embroidered case 'sleep well' and the loveliest lace I have ever seen: two dogs playing ball! (click to see it better!).
Ik vond deze gezellige lintjes en het grappigste antieke kant dat ik in tijden zag: twee honden die met de bal spelen!

Of course I found some wooden spools too!
Those Ackermann spools in front are really small, really cute.
Natuurlijk vond ik ook wat houten garenklosjes, de twee op de voorgrond zijn piepklein.

I use the spools to decorate with or to swap. I keep the motherload in apothecary jars, the large one for blacks and whites, the smaller one for the colored spools. I keep the empty ones in a small tin.
Ik gebruik de klosjes om mee te decoreren en de motherload bewaar ik in glazen stopflessen, ook decoratief natuurlijk! Ik vind altijd het meest zwarte en witte garenklosjes.

The largest spool I have is about 5", that is a wooden spool, I have one that is way bigger made out of cardboard:
Dit is de grootste klos, die vond ik in België en werd daar bobineke genoemd. Hij is ongeveer 12 centimeter lang, meer een bobine dus! Ik heb nog wel een grotere klos, maar die is weer niet van hout, maar van karton, een kringloopvondst.

A thrift store find of a couple of weeks ago.

American wooden spools sometimes have stamps on top, but European spools always have paper labels, some of them little pieces of art, like this one, a gift from Mrs. H. (I don't think she ever buys wooden spools because she cannot find anything else!).
Het leuke aan de klosjes zijn de etiketten, soms ware kunstwerkjes. Dit klosje kreeg ik van Mrs. H. (ik denk niet dat zij ooit een houten klosje koopt omdat ze anders niets kan vinden).

I also found this wooden needle case. The sewing notions just put me in a flow, after that I found all kind of neat stuff but I keep the rest for next time (a teaser obviously!).
Als dan eenmaal het eerste schaap over de brug is dan volgen er meer! Ik vond ook nog deze naaldenkoker, en de rest laat ik jullie een volgende keer zien (ja, dat noemen ze nou een teaser!)
