Silver Sunday part 3: Silver Smoker's Requisites

Too bad I quit smoking. Mmm, I never thought that these words would ever come out of my mouth, but on this Silver Sunday I would have loved to show you these items:

as they should be used.

Welcome to another part of Silver Sunday hosted by the lovely Beth of the Gypsy Fish.
Thanks for hosting again Beth!

Let's take a closer look to my 'smoking items', which belonged to the collection of my mother, who never smoked!

Of Sijmen Wouter Franken?
First the lovely small cigarette box.
It was made for short cigarettes, the ones without a filter or maybe the ones you'd roll yourself, which is quite common here in the Netherlands for men and women. The engravings are beautiful and I love everything with initials.

This is the backside of the cigarette box.

This is one of my favorite items of my mothers' collections;
the predecessor of the matchbox, google translator says the English word would be a tinderbox, but I am not sure, as the word is out of use, of course. We Dutch would call it a tondeldoos, in fact (yes you are right Barbara); a tondeldoosje (-je always means that the item or person or whatever is small), which is another word that isn't used very often in Dutch conversation.
If you look carefully you see a date engraved: 18 24/5 73 which means September 24th 1873. I just love that.

Up next is the matchbox holder. I tried to show you what the purpose of this thing is but my match box is too small, well you get an idea.

And finally the two cigarette holders. Ah to smoke like Marlene Dietrich did...no really if I think about it I already get a nasty taste in my mouth. Nothing like an ex smoker, I hate smoking, cannot stand it anymore.

Next Sunday is the last Silver Sunday, so grab your chance to see some lovely items. Check the list of participants at Beths' blog! Beth has a gorgeous chatelaine, that belonged to her great grandmother, in her post of this week, you wouldn't miss it, believe me!

Thanks for your visit, hugs LiLi.

Ma chère Lili!!! Oh, thank you for coming by to have a slice of bread with me! And I must know several names of the dark bread of which you speak....I have always wondered about those wonderful dark breads, but I know nothing of Dutch cuisine! And the cheese....all I know is GOUDA? That itself is the most delicious, creamy cheese! Wouldn't that be just awesome if I could go to your lovely town? Hey, one day, do a post on your town, perhaps in the spring and show us around the marketplaces! Lili, this silver collection is absolutely exquisite; this is not the first time you have shown us a top-notch silver collection, that belonged to your mother! I have never seen its equal! Very lovely, indeed. Thank you Lili for your lovely compliments and dear friendship. You mean a lot to me dear friend! Bisous, Anita

Lovely items.. and such a shame that the paraphernalia associated with this unhealthy habit, are so attractive. I smoked once upon a time and had a lovely shagreen cigarette case and amber cigarette holder.. I also favoured the beautifully crafted Black Russian Sobranie Cigarettes. Just the smell of them makes me feel queasy now!

Hi LiLi, These are beautiful silver pieces and I'm sure that all non-smokers can enjoy them too! I love the pattern on the cigarette box. The matchbox holder and the cigarette holders are very pretty too. I have never smoked but I wouldn't mind to have such wonderful smoker's items in my collection! Your mother had collected a lot of fantastic treasures.
Have a great Silver Sunday!
Hugs,
Julia

Smokey, uh Silver! Sunday!

Lili,

I also love your pretty silver items and so nice that they belonged to your mother. 1873 is really old for the one piece! I have my Father-in-laws cigarette holder and plan to turn to use it for 2 pictures and it will be a frame.

I am not a smoker, but am lover of all things vintage and silver to boot. I would much more enjoy seeing them on a tray than actually using them. Thank you for sharing.

What a beautiful collection. I love old silver accessories, especially the kind that no one really uses anymore. I'd imagine the matchbox holder was replaced with the Bic lighter.

They are nice objects...but better you just look at them and not USE them! Happy SS!

Hello Lili,
Your Silver Sunday smoking pieces are very cool. The engraving is lovely.
The closest I ever came to smoking was when my grandfather would visit and I thought it was so dapper of him to smoke, and would pretend to smoke the butts he threw away. I know...yuk!) (sadly, it is what killed him) He smoked a lovely pipe and rolled his own cigarettes. As a little girl, I liked the way he smelled, but now I don't I don't like the smell at all, other than reminding me of my grandfather.

Great silver pieces, but I am so glad you quit smoking. Although in that era, smoking looked so romantic and made everyone seem more talented.

Love the cigarette holders! Such a shame that such beautiful pieces are used for such an unhealthy habit. Oh well, you can always put a candy cigarette in them and pretend!

Mmmmmm lovely! Beautiful to look at even if you don`t smoke. I quit smoking so long ago that I am not really sure that I acually did smoke! My mother never knew that I did anyway....She still says "I am so glad that you where wise enough never to smoke" .....Haven`t led her to believe otherwise I am ashamed to say. Don`t want her to think "unwise" of me do I!

I'm glad you've put down your sigaretten, but all those silver accessories would make you feel quite sophisticated, I think. (And yes, I do read the Dutch parts to see what little bits I can figure out! I always appreciate your reassurance, though!)

Wow! What a lovely collection... The cigarette holders are my favorite. I've never seen silver ones. Most of them that I've come across have been in bakelite.

These silver items are just so lovely. It kind of makes cigarette smoking "prettier" in some ways. I used to smoke, eons ago,not for long. I think I was going through a rebellious period in my life, but never had such pretties to use. Jeany's box is just beautiful, Lili. Love it! You are right, she is quite talented. The colors are scrumptious! Have a happy day,

Kitty

Liefs Leni

I love the cigarette box. This box reminded me of a boot shaped ash tray that my father had in his collection. It too had the same kind of etchings on it as on this box.
