Whatever happened to August?

I don't know about you guys, do you have the feeling that August was lost somehow? We had so much autumn days. But I have good news: August is still here in my hometown Dordrecht:
We hadden zoveel herfstige dagen.

Click on the photo to see 'August', which in fact is Villa Augustus.
Let's get rid of that tree, ah, that's better! If you follow any dutch blogs, you must have seen this restaurant and the hotel before, but of course I hope to show you some other pictures.
Summer in August (=zomer in augustus) seems like over.
This drawing was made by Dorine de Vos, an extremely talented woman who revamped Hotel New York (I wrote a post about that here) and did an almost better job in and outside Villa Augustus.
The hares are the trade mark of Villa Augustus and can be seen as doormats, on plates, menus and even as gifts in the gift shop:
(Remember that I bought that one?)
(Weten jullie nog dat ik deze kocht?)
I have been a fan of this place since it opened in July 2007, just before I started blogging, but I put a lot of photos in my Picasa album back then.
View from the garden in July 2007 when it was just opened.
Kijkje in de tuin in juli 2007

En hier in juli 2010
This is Villa Augustus in July 2010 (mmm I come here about every month and I always take photos!)

Behind the restaurant is the vegetable garden. The food that is served in the restaurant is organic and is as much as possible from this garden.
At the end of the vegetable garden is the is the hotel. Both buildings were part of the water supply system of Dordrecht. This one was the water tower, the restaurant was the pumping station.
Both are obviously from another time. This is the oldest 19th century building, the other art deco dates probably from the 1920/30ties.
It was this old photo that inspired Dorine de Vos and her partners to make Villa August into something castle like.
Including a formal garden, which is behind the hotel:
(Click on the photo to see the details)
And castle walls which are made of old bricks and parts of old buildings, they sure know how to recycle.
Even some pavements are made of broken stones. Love it!
This would be a cheap way to make a path.

En nu eens binnen kijken:
Let's go inside the restaurant, the rooms in the hotel are for guests only :-(
I think it is fun to have all different tables and chairs and napkins too.
Click on the photo to see the chandelier, which changes every season:
Christmas/Kerst
Spring/Lente
Other lamps, too bad the Venetian chandelier in the restroom lower right corner doesn't show in the mosaic.
Even the restrooms are something else in Villa Augustus
The industrial characteristics were kept, like this green water basin, now a border between public and professional part of the restaurant.
This rack filled with sample bottles was kept too. I wish I had one, don't you?
More gardens at/tuinen in Villa Augustus.
Nog meer tuin

Gedicht geschreven op de watertoren:
Poem on the water tower:
August brings in Spring
and makes that turn into Summer
but also in Autumn and Winter
August will stand firm as a tower
near Vlij and Wantij.

(Vlij and Wantij are both rivers, translation by me)
I love Villa August in every season!
Hope you love it too!
Villa Augustus is de moeite waard in ieder seizoen!

xoxo LiLi M.

PS I wish that Blogger stops changing everything again and again!

WOW! Your photos are wonderful LiLi! What amazing architecture. I've been thinking of putting a small path way outside my home in the backyard area. I love the photo of the broken stone path. It has given me inspiration!

LiLi I too wonder about what has happened to the once lovely month of August, we never had so many grey and rainy and stormy days in August before. Well you are lucky that you still have August in your town! That place is amazing! I love it all, the architecture, the gardens, all the details and the hares of course! Thank you for sharing it with us! I come to your country in 3 weeks for a business trip. Do you have any tips on must sees or must go antique shops in Rotterdam or Amsterdam City btw? They would be greatly appreciated!
Let's hope for a golden September!

Maar het maakt natuurlijk wel weer even duidelijk dat "time flies when you are having fun".
Marja.

Liefs Ester

Hi Lili!
What a fancy place! And the big chandelier is just amazing!
I've always been impressed by the ability of Dutch people to steal the soil to water, as well as by their(your) huge creativity!
Hope that September has brought you some sunshine! :)
Thanks for your great comments on my blog!

LILI!!!! First of all, I am with you in asking, WHERE DID AUGUST GO? I am preparing for my students who return next Tuesday and the amount of stress I have had just since Monday is unbelievable. After such a relaxing and creative summer....but these photos Lili, oh how I want to go to the Netherlands....AND LILI, that Rabbit with wings, CAN I BUY ONE FROM THAT RESTAURANT? I have to have one....heeee! I love rabbits, and one with wings, well, that is a hoot! Let me know if that is a vintage piece, or if that is something that can be easily purchased. How are you dear one? And your weather? We are definitely getting into fall here! Sending you lots of hugs, Anita

Lili the Villa August is an amazing place. Can you belive how much that garden has grown since it started? I love the paths and the structure that it has. Taking this all in is wonderful. I think after going through your post a couple more times, I may even be able to say that I have been there...or at least say I have seen the bathrooms.hehe

What a wonderful little trip you took us on! I so enjoyed learning about the Augustus hotel and restaurant. The gardens are especially beautiful! And the little painting with the rabbits is exquisite- So very whimsical! Thanks for taking us with you:)

What fun and fantastic pictures you are sharing, the architecture is amazing, love that water tower.
I can see why that is a favorite place of yours, everything is so interesting.

Oh sweet Lili, my friend! Your visit is a balm to my soul, it really is! Oh, that winged rabbit....ZUT! I have never seen one like it, but IF you do....let me know! I will keep my eyes peeled for one here in the states! And as for my new teaching venture...there is a lot to change. Due to the economy and budget cuts, two English teachers were let go, so us French homeroom teachers have to do our jobs AND the job of the English teachers. I will have INSTEAD OF 25 students, I WILL NOW HAVE 50! I can only do my best, but in all of that, I need to keep my sanity with humor. I am pretty good at that...but knowing that all of us have support is what will keep us running enthusiastically for this new teaching model. Plus, the standards and curriculum are being jammed into our minds at an alarming rate, our brains just can't contain it all. ENOUGH SAID....LIFE IS GREAT and you are a precious soul. Enjoy your weekend and thinking of you ma belle.....Anita

Oh my goodness such a beautiful place! Your photos are fabulous. (My German gr-grandfather's name was "August.") ;)
We have had fall-like weather the past few days, but we're back to hot & humid again tomorrow. If this summer weather goes on for too long, one of these days we'll pass right by fall and go straight to winter! lol
