Vintage and new Christmas finds

Though I think that no one in the Netherlands already started to decorate for Christmas,
(It seems that our Santa who is hanging around in the Netherlands right now, isn't a fan of Christmas decoration and hey who wants to annoy the holy guy who is giving the most precious presents? Not me)
it isn't too early to do some Christmas shopping.
I have something with gnomes, I told you before. And what is a gnome without a mushroom? These figurines are all glass traditionally blown and for sale in the Dutch Blokker for less than 2 euro each.

Today the annual Christmas sale at the thrift store started. So I went there and did some shopping there as well, let's take a look:
Another mushroom! Vintage is still the best don't you think?
This is my absolute favorite find. Santa in an 'aeroplane thing'. It even has a glass hook to hang the ornament horizontally. The weather over here is still quite grey, hence the photos are dark, sorry.
A bottle brush tree with mercury glass ornaments. I hardly ever see these trees over here, only new ones.
A whole bunch of tree toppers. All glass, all traditionally blown. Mmm how many trees do you think we will have in our Christmas home?
Not that many. Last year I had a small gathering of tree topper in vases, I'm planning to do that this year too, just add a few toppers ;-).

Another tree topper.
Nog een piek, één van de betere.
This should be the best one, except one of the bells is broken :-(, but I couldn't leave it for 15 cents! One day I'll find a bell to replace the broken one. I love the tarnished silver, which indicates that this is an old one. Well how to recognize vintage Christmas ornaments?
The one on the left is the oldest, you can see that as the hanging system (sorry I don't know the word, not even in Dutch) is (tarnished) silver metal and always small. The one below is a traditional glass ornament too, but newer, the hanging system is wider. The one on the right is a new one too, traditionally Christmas ornaments are mercury glass, this one is clear glass though the top is shaped traditionally. The glitter is quite silvery which indicates not so old. The reason for buying is that I like it!
The Christmas bell on the left is probably from the 80-ties. The top is colored, typical for that period. This color is a price indication. (all red tops: 1 euro, blue tops 2 euro etc). The other 3 ornaments are from the 60-ties, I have a lot like these from my parents. As I break a few ornaments every year I always buy vintage Christmas ornaments when the price is right.
I couldn't resist these. I think these look so American. These are probably from the 70-ties. They shout: "Barbara, queen of vintage Christmas ornaments and Shiny Brites", too me.
This new one can be part of my Christmas decoration too, as I love all glass ornaments. You can see that it's new because of the gold top and the white glitters, but still this one is traditionally made.
Our thrift store has a special book case filled with vintage (=expensive) ornaments, but these two were amongst the new ones, so I had to pay only 15 cents for these birds :-). If a bird has a silk tail it is almost for certain a good one. There should be painted eyes too. The clip should be tarnished silver. Here the lower one is the eldest.
Now you are all vintage Christmas ornaments experts.  Just remember that I write this from experience with Dutch vintage Christmas ornaments. This owl is vintage too and it is painted with a chalky paint, I have some more old ornaments painted this way.
Now last but not least; this funny little chap was sent to me by Kathy, thanks sweetie.
I'll show more gifts from this nice lady in next post (yes there is a cliff hanger) and the theme will be birds!

Thanks for your lovely comments, have fun buying old and new Christmas stuff and crafting,

xoxo LiLi M.

GOOD EVENING LILI! HALLO MIJN VRIENDIN! I have been learning a little Dutch! Oh, these darling ornaments bring back very precious memories because my mom had a wonderful collection of vintage ones. I remember breaking one every year as I played around the tree to pinch and prode my gifts!!! A delightful post filled with childhood memories and inspiration for our adult homes and family life.

GROSSES BISES MA BELLE LILI! Anita

Hi Lili,
I needed this lesson, because not having much experience in buying vintage ornaments I alwasy look at them and think,'is this old or made to look old'
I will now remember to look closely at the hanger area.
I love all of your ornaments. But I did find my favorite among them all. I love that little mushroom one that you found. It looks so precious, almost childlike. My second favorite is the flying Santa. I can see why you love that one. Or yes, a the little siver birds are so cute.
I haven't started any indoor decorating yet for the holidays, but I did get all the outdoor lights hung so I wouldn't have to do it in the snow. But like you, I have done a little Christmas shopping. So fun!
hugs to you my sweet friend...

Those are all so pretty. One of my favorite memories was going to Frankfurt and seeing the bins filled with Christmas ornaments during the holiday season.

Thank you for your very informative post, I've recently found a vintage ornament shaped like an umbrella in a box in my garage..who knows from where it comes?!
Your mushrooms are so cool!..and guess what..this year I bought a Santa sitted on a mushroom and a pink cupcake too!
I'm in love with the sight from your window....but do you really keep that pretty lace tablecloth outdoor in the snow?! :)

Heerlijk straks weer alles in kerstsferen!

Liefs Ester

These Christmas ornaments are soooo wonderful! Especially love the aeroplane and the owl.

Thanks also for the great idea for displaying tree toppers. I've got a number that I've collected too, but only one tree!

Hi LiLi, I also think that the vintage ornaments are the best and buy them when the price is right. I especially love your flying Santa and the vintage tree topper with the bells. I'll keep my eyes open for a single bell that would match.
Hugs,
Julia

Hallo Lili
wat een leuke post over
de oude kerstballen,
ik ben ook helemaal gek op oud
kerstgerief, het heeft z'n mooie
uitstraling, dit jaar heb ik ze niet
in de boom gehangen want ik heb
een klein katje en die heeft nog
nooit een kerstboom gezien, dus
dit jaar doe ik het maar niet
met de nostalgie versiering

fijne avond nog
vriendelijke groetjes Manja
