A collection of 31 or more....

Hello and welcome at the final part of my collections series. Today the last part: 31 pieces. The idea was counting from 1 till 31 during the month of March and we did it! I had a great time showing you collections by accidence, cherished pieces, worthless things gathered for crafting etc. etc. I enjoyed your comments so much thank you. I'll close this series with a lot of inspiration for new posts!
I'll end with a collection 'par excellence' to me: Barbies!
The problem with 31 Barbies is that it is hard to make them all visible on the photo. If you count well you see 30...there are 31:
One of the small girls, the one with the pigtails, is on the 31 photo, but you only see her stand.
Aaah, who cares? We count till 31 anyway!
It all started October the 8th 1966, when I got the girl on the right, a Skooter bff of Barbies little sister, on my 5th birthday, I was thrilled! I think my mom was thinking that this doll was more appropriate for a little blonde girl like me than her bff's grown up sister. I thought that the world was turning an extra round when Mrs. Smith, an acquaintance of my mothers' gave me a real Barbie doll that very same birthday:
It was a 'bubble cut' Barbie like the second from right^.  Mine didn't survive my childhood. While playing teacher, my favorite game, I had to punish her for her arrogant look and put her in the dustbin for a while. Never heard from her since :-(
Now a lot of collectors search and pay a lot for the most rare examples. Like the black Francie, I have a reproduction on the left. This doll was marketed at the wrong time, Francie was Barbie's cousin, a black cousin? In 1966? So only the caucasian version was a tremendous success and now the original Black Francie is one of the rarest dolls of the Barbie family.
In 1966?
Another popular way of collecting is 'Mint in box', old dolls but still in the box, preferable untouched, command a high price, only exceeded by NRFB (never removed from box). But I like to dress the dolls and put them in a Barbie car or create a situation:
Like this^ one, that was set up unintentionally for the '31' photo:
Ken (nr. 1) arrives at Barbies dressed up as a clown (hat and wig in right hand, mask in left), Barbie is waiting in her wedding dress, her mother totally disappointed. Barbie tells Ken: This isn't what I  expected of your costume!
That's why I love the Barbie dolls with wigs. On the far left Barbie 'Fashion Queen' with a color magic wig next to the same Barbie in her original outfit. Third in row is Midge (Barbie's bff) with one of her wigs, next to Midge without a wig.
Eleven the same wig Barbies with different wigs. Outfit and hairdo do make a difference!
That is also the case with this^ Doobie Brother (remember the Doobie Brothers?) like Ken in the middle, that I gave a new hairdo myself. He started his life with a crew cut. The process of giving a Barbie doll new hair is called rerooting: new hair is plugged in plug by plug. Now you can create the hairdo and look that you want, or restore an old doll:
On the right the original 'Swirl' Barbie and on the left a rerooted Swirl Barbie who suffered a very bad hair day the day she encountered a small one with scissors.  I have always been attracted to Barbie because of all small accessories, especially during the 'vintage period':
Here^ some altered Ikea boxes that used to hang in my Barbie room. A fun way of displaying the small pieces:
Skipper, Barbie's little sister is holding a small 'Swirl' Barbie doll with a matching skirt...oh tdf!
I played and played with Barbie until the seventies. I loved the Mod Barbie clothing. I didn't get any of it, my parents thought it was way to expensive and I was too old! So I made entire outfits for my fake Barbies. Sadly I sold every self made outfit to a friend when I was about 14. A lot of Barbie collectors became Barbie collectors of deprivation of the real thing!
Nowadays Barbie manufacturer Mattel has reproduced a lot of the Barbies of the 'golden years' (1959-1973). Maybe that is one of the reasons that the prizes of vintage Barbie have totally collapsed. The current economic recession maybe another reason.
And Mattel has designed new vintage inspired dolls, meant for the grown up collector, not as toys. Here^ the first (nr. 1) Silkstone Barbie on the left, nr. 5 on the bed.

I have over a 100 Barbies and my daughter used to love playing with her Barbies too:
I started seriously collecting Barbie in 1997, before that I was the accidental Barbie collector. In 2002 we moved to this house and we had a lot to renovate. This ever dusty place was totally unsuited for no matter what collection and the Barbies stayed in their boxes. I unpacked them in 2006 and packed them again when I needed the Barbie room to be my as a craft room:
It was a bit too crowdy to craft over there.
Now I had to unpack them again for this series and I loved it. I think I will empty our attic, move everything outside and make it collector's paradise. I'll keep you guys posted.
Aren't these guys far too cute to spend their lives in a box?

Thanks to anyone who visited my blog during these series. I told you before but I cannot tell you enough how I enjoyed all your comments, thanks  a million! I will definitely continue my collectors posts. To start with an epilogue and a give away this week! Hope to see you then!

Good morning my dear Lili....Lili, I cannot begin to tell you the fond memories that you have evoked here with the superb finale; my mother gave me almost every Barbie imaginable, and you have displayed them here. What you have presented the most however, are the memories of a grand childhood. I would come home every day from school and my dear mother would have a new Barbie outfit handsewn, waiting for me, laid out on my bed. Along with her chocolate homemade cake and a glass of milk, I would enjoy these little goodies and like you, create scenarios with my dolls! She even made little crowns, YES, CROWNS! and necklaces, nylons, hats, EVERYTHING! And, to my chagrin, I no longer have these lovelies. I sold everything before I took a trip to Japon way back in 1979. I was 21. What a maroon....my mother-n-law who is an avid collector of vintage, almost killed me when she found out that I sold them!

Oh my sweet, you have a hit here. You have blessed us with something sweet to look forward to everyday, and thank you for brightening my day!

Much love and admiration to a dear woman, Anita

What fun, what memories...The Doobie brother is too funny.

I loved Mod; I remember dressing in that style and some of my best memories of things I wore
came from that time. Pop Art dresses, drop waist style …I loved it all…and my white
Go-go boots…
I really loved reading all of your post this past 31 days; it was a wonderful way to start my day.

Oh, Lili, I'm sad that your series is over, but what a wonderful way to end it! Like some have mentioned, I also sold my childhood Barbie collection years ago and have regretted it ever since. I think that I am trying to make up for it with my ball-jointed doll collection.

I hope that you will do any series of your collections someday, because I'm sure that you have a lot more treasures in your lovely home.

We blijven altijd meisjes !!!

Dearest LiLi,
What a FABULOUS post!!! You have me smiling from ear to ear. Your Barbie memories and your terrific sense of humor, has me smiling!

My cousin gave me the first Barbie (blond Ponytail ~ Black and white striped bathing suit (one piece). I had Midge, Skipper and Ken too and took playing this game VERY seriously.
This game "Barbies" couldn't start until her entire house was perfect,
(beds made of shoe boxs, etc.),then dialog between the dolls ensued. Parents WERE NOT allowed to hear
what the said. Doors were shut!!
I made most of her clothes too.

Then on day, at age 10 I wanted to wear lipstick, the next day I played jump rope, the next day I wanted a bra, the next day I played hopscotch, the next day I gave away ALL of my barbies and their stuff to two little girl neighbors.
the next day I regretted it.

Thanks for the memories.
Happy Easter dear LiLi in case I don't get back to you before Sunday.
Love,
Constance

Groetjes, Corry

Well, you did it! I had no idea you had SO MANY Barbies. I still have mine (but not nearly that many). Did I ever tell you my mother knitted Fair Isle sweaters for them? The knitting needles were the diameter of toothpicks, I think. Lovely series - I would never be able to pull this off!
