A collection of one: a Hümmel figurine

A collection of one? How can one be a collection? In the end I came up with this:
Nederlandse vertaling onderaan:

What? A Hümmel figurine, these are collectibles, so I think one is a collection, especially when you are sure that this will be the only one forever.
How many? There is only this one Hümmel figurine, I have a few Goebel collectibles though.
When? I inherited this one from my parents in 2003, but it was there even before I was born.
Why? I think Harry Potter would call this a portkey. When I pick up this little statue I am back in Rotterdam, 1964-1965. I was terrified of dogs, especially the boxer of my neighbor, who was always behind me on the couch, when we visited her. That neighbor could not understand me at all. Why being afraid of a dog that doesn't harm anybody? But I was small and that dog was huge! And did that dog know that he was suppose to harm nobody?
First and Last: My mother had a few of these Hümmel figurines, but this one appealed so much to me! I could watch this forever. Just feeling like that little guy who was afraid of dogs too. I had to have this one, my brother took the others. I have often thought of giving this to him, but I just cannot. If I pick it up...my memories start with the warm feeling of being save with my parents...
Is this kitsch or beautiful? It really doesn't matter.
And now what? I have this out of sight in a closed cupboard. I am affraid that people want to give me more of these. I just like this one.
Anything else?

After I inherited this figurine I examined it closely again and suddenly I saw that this was mended. When you look closely, you'll see that the right branch was glued back on. I cannot remember, but this must have been my fault...

Groetjes LiLi M.

Do you have a collection of just one? Or any questions for me? I would love to know!
xoxo LiLi M.

Hi LiLi, I just had to chuckle when I read that you keep this figurine in a closed cupboard. Well, I guess I would too ;-). My collection of one is my husband, lol.
Have a great day and I'm looking forward to seeing your collection of 2, tomorrow!
Hugs,
Julia

Lii! I remember the Hummels...they were so popular and way back in the 80s, I loved to do cross-stitch and did one of the boy and girl with an umbrella....I don't have just ONE of anything. Unless it is a rare find of course, but if there is an extra of something I like, I GET TWO OF THEM! And you have inherited a fine collection of beautiful vintage and antique finds as well, Lili! I still think about that lovely silver collection of your mother's!

Bisous ma chère! Anita

Leuk op naar nr 2.

Ahhhh now there's the trick... hide things in the cupboard so friends and relatives don't start adding to the collection! ;) Brilliant!

I love your Hummel, by the way! =)

Well that is how the collection multiplies when friends see one item and think you need more. I started with a tea cart and now have so many tea pots I guess I now have a collection of many but I still like the tea cart the best which was the first item:) It is all about the memories either one or 101!

Lili,
I too have a collection of one Hummel which I got from my mom’s estate.
My Hummel angel figurine was one that I bought for my mom with my first paycheck from my first job when I was in high school. My mom loved to shop we use to go all over for the best deals, she would go shopping two to three times a week, from city to city. She worked so Saturday was her day from sunup to sundown to go do what she loved best.
We were walking down the street from a favorite shop when I spotted these dusty angels in a corner of the front window of this run down jewelry store. I went in and asked to see the figurine there was no price tag on it so I asked how much, he offered it to me for a forth of what their were going for, I happily had him wrap it up and with joy gave it to mom on the spot. She was delighted and showed it off to all that came to the house and told the story of how I got it for her with my first paycheck.
I keep them in a drawer where I keep some of my doll props. The Angels comes out at Christmas and then I tuck them away. I too would not want anymore to show up as gifts…
I must tell you the story of the tiny owl I once displayed many years ago and within a year ten more owls
Came into my life as gifts…I really was not an owl person.

It was so fun reading this about you and your Hummel and why it means so much to you. I don't really remember being afraid of dogs much except a neighbor's boxer. It was a fearsome thing.
I have a collection of one...my husband...I only care to have one of these too. LOL

This one is special indeed Lili, especially since it was from your parents who cherished it even before you came along! wow!
Plus...I loved the story of you being afraid of dogs...this little Hummel is perfect! I'm assuming that you still fear dogs and therefore keep it out of site? ;)
Love this post and I can't wait to see the next one. I think I'm going to love reading each and every one of them...I'm so glad March has 31 days :))))))

Hi Lili,

I have just finished reading all 22 posts of your collections so far.

I wanted to comment on this one as I love your collection of one. I also understand why you keep the figurine in the closet. Sometimes one is all you want.

Hoi Lili,
